We're planning to get married in a ceremony abroad, has anyone any ideas about family who cannot travel. Religious ceremony is ruled out, and we can't get married in registry if we're all ready married

What exactly are you looking for?

If family can't travel, then it seems quite clear they can't attend a wedding abroad.

Are you married already?? If so, why do you want another ceremony?

In my experience the majority of people who chose to get married in Rome are rabid, right-wing Catholics.

Could you have a blessing done, somewhere that means something to you as a couple, followed by a party with your family?

Where you getting Rome from?? There are more places "abroad" than Italy.

Re blessing, not religious so not sure if you can just get a general, secular thing done, and as I said if you're married already you cannot renew vows in Ireland.

Maybe just a big party so

To be honest, that's really pretty much all anyone ever does. I have friends who essentially had 4 wedding receptions; a mini-reception in Edinburgh after the ceremony (dinner really) for the 23 people at the wedding. Then they had about 80 people at a reception-style dinner in the Burlington (she was based in Dublin til she met him) and a big buffet-style party in London for 200+ (he's from London and they both now live there) and another dinner/reception/thing in Carlow (where she's orignally from and her parents insisted on there being a celebration for the local family). Next time they're in Mumbai visiting his family (his parents are Indian) there'll probably be another party there, whether they like it or not :D

I have other friends who actually got married 3 times; registry office here in Dublin, registry office in Finland (for her family), and then their own pagan religious blessing in Barberstown house, with regular reception, which they considered their "real" wedding.

But trust me - all your guests really want is the party. They don't care about the ceremony ;)

If your family can't travel, why not see if you can stream the ceremony online? then they can watch it as it happens. Then have a nice meal, followed by the usual 'afters'? Or maybe this page might give you some pointers. http://tinyurl.com/3cw8w2

Best wishes to you and your HTB, may your hearts be filled with love and your home filled with happiness.
