Posted this in Motors as well, but no joy, though there might be more knowledge here!

Been looking at late 944 S2's and 968's. Obviosuly 968's demand a premium, so they may be out, but does anyone have any personal experience of owning and running one of these? Max of 200 miles a week, and that won't be every week.

    Hi Gatster,

I'm just sticking up a few pics of my S2, to encourage you in the right direction. I haven't had mine for too long, but if forced to abbreviate ownership into one word, it would have to be "amasing!!!!!" (ok, that's one with five exclamation marks, but you get the idea).

I'm mad busy with work at the moment (hense the reason I'm arsing around the classic car forum!) but in short. 20MPG+ avg (with a lot of beign stuck in traffic), parts are cheap from ebay and just join the owners club and you will be given contacts to get any work done that is needed.

Buy one, if you find in six months you can't afford it, sell it off then. I could have bought a second hand fiesta for the money I payed for mine. Fuel is becoming so expensive (or should I say the tax on fuel), it could be now or never. You only live once!

Cheers for that, yours looks in mint nick - did you buy privately or import? There are a couple that look decent on Carzone, I'm certainly finding less reasons to do this. I have to wait and see if I'm changing jobs, once thats confirmed, I'll know what I can do!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 175 ✭✭theprofessor

I bought privately from the UK. As many people will tell you, history is all important and it's just something that the 944's here in Ireland didn't really have (the majority anyway). The blue 92 S2 on carzone looks really mint and original (it came from up north). There are a couple of pics of it here on boards. I was looking at the same car before I bought mine.

www.pistonheads.co.uk is the place to go.

The major point to note with the 944's is that they have bottomed out in terms of depreciation, the 968 won't do this for a good number of years yet. So for poor folk or tight arses there's still money to be lost if you intend having it a few years and selling it on. So pick a good 944, keep it in good nick and there's no reason you should lose money on the resale. If you keep it a good few years you could even make a profit.

The reason behind a lot of that is their age and many were abused. So many are being scrapped now that good ones demand a premium and the by product is cheap parts/spares from ebay :)

Ok the tax is nasty, but that's what we get living in a high stealth tax economy. It's a kick in the nuts, but save up and once a year pay it and then take your car for a long drive you remind yourself why you did it.

If you make a decision to buy, give a shout and I'll let you know what you should be looking for and avoiding. I thought there were more porsche owners frequenting the forum, why did it take a lazy poster to reply ;)

As you can see, my own S2 is pretty mint alright, couple of very small issues I still need to get sorted, a worn headlight mount and wiper but no doubt it's the best 944 in the country :D

Yeah, I saw the blue S2 on carzone but think it's expensive for the miles, no matter how mint. Just out out of interest, and tell me it's none of my business if you want, but how much was VRT, as they're not on the calculator :(

I don't mind telling you the VRT I payed, it was €1,275. As there is no book price, they really do make it up though. I think the chap that owns that blue S2 payed €1,250 for his and it's 3yrs younger than mine. Hardly fair but you can't really argue with the revenue.

To be honest, if the car has the history, the mileage means very little. In the uk at least, older porsches sell on condition and history. The fact that it was a conours runner up says a LOT for the car. If the history is complete and parts have been replaced on schedule, I wouldn't worry about that mileage at all on that car. Like I said, I was considering it when I began looking seriously, but it was snapped up! He seems open to bargaining anyway, I'm wondering why he's selling it, have you asked him? How would you be set for insurance?

There seems to be a big hang up about mileage here in ireland, but I believe that's a product of our 'mechanic around the corner' servicing habits (not that that is always a bad thing), but it just means books don't get stamped and the system is open to abuse. The result being the average person thinks 100,000 miles means a car is ready for the bin. Look at mileages in the US, people out in the sticks put 400K up on a car before changing it because the distances are so vast. If you look at aircraft, ships, jetski's, etc. etc. all their engine use is measured in time anyway.

Is that car within budget? Are you using it as an everyday car?

I don't really want a blue interior(!), and I'm in no rush as I'm waiting on other factors. I'd really like to get one for about 10k at the most, which with the UK prices+VRT I think should be enough for a good one - I have a base in the UK so going back to look isn't a problem (I've bought all 4 of my previous cars in the UK).

I've been watching the prices of 968's for while but love the 944 and began to see a late S2 as a good as a 968 - I'm not worried about the running costs (have had 3.0+ cars before!), and as for insurance I've got an '01 Impreza Prodrive WRX now so hope it wouldn't be any worse (saying that, my premiuim on the Impreza isn't a lot :D). I'll ring on Monday to check though.

As for use, max of 3 weekdays at the moment (150 miles) but that will only go down if I change jobs, then weekend jaunts, Dublin-Kerry run once a month.

    just joined this forum,
well just to add my bit about 944s. they are fantastic cars.the turbo especially. the tax is 300e less than the s2 per year as its a 2.5l as opposed to the 3.0 in the s2. also insurance is the same if you have it on a classic policy with carole nash through porsche club ireland.hope to meet up with other 944 enthuasists on this forum.

    Anan1 - thanks for the intro.... ;)

Well I plumped for a 968 a couple of weeks ago over a 944 as I thought it was a better car. But I was actively looking at 944 turbos's at the time.

It was all prompted by a friend buying a 944 turbo on ebay lately, and I thought it remarkably 'sensible', and cheap. Which was more than could be said for my other friend's 993........:o So, having been bitten by a 911 before, I wasn't doing it again.

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055170052&highlight=galwaytt

And it was cheaper to buy here than the UK - the fact of the matter is, car tax is a big inhibitor here, and so cars like this don't hold their value, so it's a buyer's market. With the 968 though, and it's rarity, I could still sell it into the UK next year if I can't sell it here - something you probably couldn't do with a 944.

Boy am I glad I taxed it last week, though.......beat John Gormally to it :D:D

I think the 944/968 is a good value supercar, but do bear in mind that they are all 12+yrs old, so they were supercar's then, but can be embarrassed by newer, smaller stuff now. But they're still Porsche's :p They are also easy to maintain, and parts are nearly laughably cheap - less then a current 3-series, by a long shot. And you don't need a degree in electronic eng, either.....

My two kids fit in the rear, so a 2+2 is vital for me, and the list of supercars out there that fit requirement is very small..........

Car is currently doing 23mpg on short runs, haven't had a chance to do a long run in it yet, so can't comment.

btw..........I know where there's still a 944 turbo for sale in Co Longford........

............wow, that is a seriously good looking 944 ! !

I thought the VRT would be a lot more than that !

I have a friend with a 944 S2 Cab, and I drove it once, some power and torque from that big 4 banger !!

professor - wow, just looked at your pics now - that's the nicest looking 944 I've ever seen - the cup wheels move it on 10 years, easy, and that's a really good colour.

Must do 'lunch' together sometime :D

    hi lads,

Thanks about the car lads, I'd love to say I had more of a part in it looking that way, but all the work was done on it when I bought it from the uk.

galwaytt, I have actually had the pleasure of seeing your car in the metal a ouple of times in the past not too long ago. Last time must have been just before you bought it, it was having something done in the garage at the same time as mine. Congrats on your purchase too by the way! :D Lunch could be done alright, we could meet in athlone or somewhere in the middle. Maybe some other 944/porsche owners here would be interested in a meet up too? Turbocabrio might be up for it?

mercmad, on the vrt, I had been given an 'estimate' based on a similar car by year and mileage, etc. The guy in the vrt office was really sound. When I found that car & brought it back though, I have to say I was really s^*&£ing myself in case they came out with some crazy figure.

Long story I'll cut very short, but I came home without part of the V5C I should have. So the VRT office couldn't reg the car without it. It took a MONTH!!! in the post from the UK. Anyway, the day I went to reg the car just so happened to be the first of the month (the busiest day, because prices are adjusted for inflation and such. Also you start a new tax month). So it was mad busy. One of the guys went up to the counter, looking decidedly nervous. The girl said to him "I'm afraid the price has changed". At that, guy practially wet himself and then looked like he was going to get sick, but she followed with, "yes, it has gone down €1xx".

After hearing this, I tried my luck, but because there's no book she said prices are slower to change, etc, etc. I was just happy to get the whole thing sorted at that point (never thought I'd see the day that I'd be "HAPPY" to so much cash for a piece of plastic with some numbers on it, what a scam).

While I think of it, everyone have a read of this....

I'd really love to do a HUGE SMOKING DONUT in that guys carpark.

Does any one know of any 944's being broken in ireland? I have never heard of any here. The worst bit about getting parts is the postage, usually amounts to more than the parts.

Galwaytt and turbocabrio, have you joined or are you considering joining the owners club? I joined a few weeks ago. We have missed all the spins and trackdays for this year though. I was talking to one of the members last week, a load of the lads went over to the ring for a long weekend.

I forgot to say, I won't begin to list the work that went into maintaining this car by the previous owners (I'd be typing all day), but some of the reasons why it looks a bit more modern than other 944's are......

    968 wing mirrors
    968 Turbo adjustable spoiler (OEM)
    968 door handles
    The Turbo Cup II wheels
The strosek splitter & side skirts
Front end respray many years back (but it is back to being stone chipped at the front again, as a model they really do seem to suffer badly from this).
    Clear indicators front and sides

The amount of money that has been spent on it over the years is nuts (not that I'm complaining :D ) also, the interior isn't too shabby either ;)

I found easier to buy a 968 already attached to the mirrors :D:D

I like those side skirts, though......mmmm, and I have a set of Cup Alloys like yours already (came with 2 x sets) more mmmmm....this could get expensive

doh, I knew I was going to get that when I was typing it!

Great stuff with the 2 x sets of alloys, I didn't get original wheels with mine. A friend in the UK has offered me a set, but cash is tight at the moment (ie: the missus would KILL me :( )

Professor: I actually bought the Silver 944 of this guy.. and I have to say he was an absolute gentleman... funny thing was... he told me about your text. I can understand where you were coming from... but in fairness, sending a text to the guy about wanting to buy the wheels on his car was a bit insulting. A phone call is always best.

Any how, the car is going a bomb... really happy with her.... might move up to the next level...or some would say....down a level to a Boxster.

Any one got any advice on what problems to look for on the Boxsters?

I hear the seals on the gearbox give trouble on the 2.5l's . Hoping to get one around 99-01.

What on earth are you on about?

If you want to know about Boxters, please get over to the main motors forum and start a new thread with your questions.

And DO NOT dig up old threads again.
