    Hi,

I've been asked to do a few small gigs for
a band that I worked with before at a charity
gig (i.e. no fees). I was wondering what the
fair going rate for a sound engineer would be?

    All quotes appreciated!

Since its only a small gig, maybe you could get some students to do it for cheap.
Where are you hoping to hold the gig?

edit: And considering its for charity, students like myself would probs do it for nothing as it's experience for them.

Engineer's for bands get feck all. It really depends if the band make money or not. Most bands bands will pay you in beer which is all well and good provided you don't want to make a living out of it.

Are you providing PA/gear? Or just sitting in on the house rig?

    Hey,

I'll be setting up mics, amps, all lines in etc to the desk and
controlling the desk for the gig but won't be bringing my own
    equipment.

If they make any money from the gig is it fair to just charge a
percentage of the takings? And if so what % would ya recommend?

    Thanks.

Well seeing as you've no heavy lifting of PA gear up stairs or anything, just go with whatever you feel is fair. I don't think door percentages work for Sound Engineers, flat fee would be better.

It all depends on your experience, do you know what you are dong with the desk and 100% sure you can give the bands all that they need etc.
If so carge what you feel is fair,
As a sound engineer I charge 150euro per gig, that does not include rental fees if I need gear for the gig.
As a musician I don't mind paying this much to anybody as a good sound guy can make the difference between a good gig and a bad one, if you play great and have a bad engineer however you will sound bad so thats also important to take into account.
100-150euro is a fair rate if you are competent at what you do!

That's great thanks for the estimates, at least now I've a
good idea where I stand and what a fair price would be for
the lads. It's not a big gig as such but more pub style
sessions as far as I know.

I probably won't be charging as much as a professional
full time sound engineer but the lads were happy with
the work we did together at a charity gig so we can
    probably come to an agreement.

    Thanks again.

I'll butt in a bit late here and ask, how much is your time worth to you? If a mate asked me to help out with a gig or something and there was no money being made I'd do it for nothing and have the craic!

If there is money involved, you'll probably be doing 5 or 6 hours work, food/drink, and transport maybe? Not much change from €100 left there. Don't be afraid to ask for as much as you like, if they can't afford it they'll tell you and you can settle for something less.
