    Hi all,
My bro is coming back home for Xmas from the states and has asked me to look into the whole car hire thing for him. He will be staying about 20 days in total. I know nothing at all about all this, I don't even have a license.....

Anyhow, can ye recommend any good places that won't rip him off royally. He is flying into Dublin and back out from there also. A small to mid size car would be ideal, something like a Ford Focus.

    Thanx,
    M

check the links on the aerlingus and ryanair websites as they can be good value (not always though). another company, argus can have some good prices. it really is a case of shopping round for car hire because one company will be cheaper one day, another the next

This applies to car hire in the US but may be helpful

Argus is good. I'm going to London in December and have hired out a decent sized car for €280 for 5 days.

dude your so screwed, 20 days over christmas and new year is gonna be like 2k for somethin like a fiesta(if ya can get anythin at all) worked in that industry for 3 years and every year everything was expensive as all hell and nearly sold out from moid october.

best bet is to ring the call centers, dont bother with the web. and the smaller ones are best as they take the longest to "sell out"

if hese comin from the states and has a us credit card, get him to check the prices there, a lot of the creditr cards in the states will cover the insurance and could be a hell of a lot cheeper than booking through ireland.

and if you do ring the call centers , take the reservation numbers as they can hold the cars for around 7 days on them for ya.

The site I gave will do a fiesta for €726 from 20 Dec to Jan 10, so I think the industry may have moved on since you worked in it.

I checked the price for a focus from 22nd Dec to 10th Jan for a 30 year old driver. €746 and was same price for a 21 year old. Damage Excess Refund (whatever that is) is €83.60.

Seems reasonable to me. But I would suggest that he books everything himself as you could end up liable if you pay for the booking.

Although with the dollar at the moment, he is probably best off using a european site.
