I'm curious to know how many are Canon/Nikon/Olympus etc camera users. I know we have a lot of Canon and a few Nikon/Olympus .. so .. do tell.

Any particular reason why you went with that brand?

Canon. Coz I couldn't afford the D70 at the time I was buying my first DSLR

Canon, i had the 350 first because i had used it before and really liked it...then by the time you factor in lenses etc its pretty impossible to change brands even if you wanted to.

I bought a second hand Canon SLR film camera so I thought it would be a good idea to stick with the brand when I already had a couple of Canon lenses.

Brand loyalty. I've had other Canon kit in the past printers/35mm camera/etc... and I've always been impressed with the quality.

Fuji. I bought the S5 pro a few months back. Its built like the D200 which is a big plus. But it was the double layered sensor that got me interested.

I own both Canon and Olympus cameras; the poll should really have checkboxes rather than radio-buttons...

Canon for digital, I bought into Canon simply because others had good things to say about the system as a whole, and the 40D seemed to be the best bang for the buck when it came out.

Olympus for my film SLR, I bumbled into the OM system by chance and now just love it. I have an adaptor ring which allows me to use the Zuiko lenses from the OM system on the 40D body, tough to focus but fun :)

Since I've moved to digital I've only bought Canon digital camera's, I guess its just what I'm used to and like :)

Canon.. because I've had several Canon film SLR's and a couple of Canon compacts. Never had a problem with any of them so why change to another brand?

I didn't expect people to have different brands, so left out the check-box option. Sorry.

Me, I went looking for a DSLR, and all the reviews for 3 months raved about the Canon 20D. So, I bought it. That was around Jan/Feb 2005. At this stage, I've too many lenses to even consider changing brands. Besides, I find the Canon lenses and cameras just brilliant. I now have 2 bodies, and a few lenses.

    Canon Olympus and Sony.

I inherently mistrust polls like this. I feel a sense of tribalism coming on.

Nah, it was just my curiosity. I know a large number use Canon, and I was wondering how many used the other brands, especially following some comments about the ISS Canon service days.

It is always useful to know who else uses the same make kit, in case you want to ask advice on lenses, accessories, etc ... or even if you wanted to chance your arm asking to borrow a lens or something. :D

No sinister reasons at all. Just curiosity.

Nikon here, purely because I went looking for a small manual camera a couple of years ago and after doing a pile of research ended up with a Nikon FE-2. Superb camera. Then you start accumulating lenses and accessories and before you know it you've got system lock-in :)

Looking depressingly like a landslide here.
Canon again here. I started with the T90 and consider it to be the best camera I ever had, it had features that the 5D doesn't (I hope you're listening Canon) and just fit my hand like a glove.

The reason I went with Canon is that they had a wider range of first party lenses than any other manufacturer at the time, and in addition the wider throat of the EF mount allows for a huge variety of other lenses to be mounted via converters. Plus the T90 looked the shit and was basically the design standard that practically every other slr has followed since.

    Fuji
Olympus for me, I had used several 35mm p&s cameras, then bought a Fuji S5000 which I loved but eventually its flaws started to bug me and I decided to buy a DSLR.

I thought about a Fuji S3 but they were expensive and the reviews weren't particularly great. My choice eventually came down to Canon, Olympus and Nikon. I went and handled all the cameras and read the reviews and in the finish chose the Olympus. The main factor in my decision was that I could buy a twin lens kit for the same price as the single lens 350D kit and less than the Nikon. Reviews that I had read suggested that the Oly kit lenses are better than the other makes, so it seemed the right way to go. My big concern was Olys poorer high ISO noise performance, but I had lived for 2 years with the S5000 so I felt that I would be OK 95% of the time, and really I think I was.
When I had handled the cameras I didn't really find the 350D that comfortable to hold, only for that I might still have bought the Canon.
On my second Oly now and a happy camper.

    Olympus
Nikon - since the D40 was the cheaper of the two main powers and had just as much muscle as the 350D and almost competing with the 400D (still has a better grip!) :p At the time the price gap between the two meant that I didn't have a choice if I wanted a dLSR.

Also I like rooting for the underdog - just not to the extent that lenses would be hard to find e.g. for Pentax or Olympus.

...and then I learnt of CLS :D

Canon wouldn't have as such a big share in reality as this poll is suggesting right?

Oh in general I doubt Canon would be so far ahead (number of customers) of Nikon and others. I think it just shows that boards has a very high percentage of Canon users. I find it very interesting.

    Olympus
    Nikon D70s.

I had a Nikon Coolpix 775 (p&s camera) for 4 or 5 years and wanted an SLR, did a bit of research both here and on dpreview and was 50/50 between the Canon & Nikon, however then I saw comparisons in Amateur Photographer and sided with the Nikon, some of my final decision was probably based on previously having a Nikon. Eventually purchased in the US.

Thats often quoted as the reason why nikon lost out in the pro-sports market years ago, Canon were the first to release USM (AFS) lenses, and nikon lagged years behind. Bad move on Nikon's part back then, I wouldn't say there's much between the two systems nowadays in terms of the pro-lenses though, right ?

22 years ago () I got my first camera a present from my brother and it was a NIkon F301 with a 50mm lens.

I wonder has anyone here ever switched from Nikon to Canon, or vice versa?
Or from any other brand to any other brand.

If not, why not? And ever been tempted by the 'enemy'?

I guess brand lock in in photography is pretty absolute. I don't think anyone can really afford to get to the stage they are lens wise with an entire new system.

For me personally the new round of Nikons are looking very exciting. I never really considered Olympus, but definitely would if they came out with a FF sensor. Pentax again make good cameras, but if I ever need access to any of their great lenses I can just mount them on the Canon's I have anyway, so I never really looked at them.

All I know is that it's a great time to be a photographer :)

Minolta are out of the camera business (a shame I love my G530 KM P&S) - Sony has bought their dSLR business though but I don't know if they're planning to introduce a FF sensor anytime soon.

I was considering a switch to Nikon for one or two reasons until the 40D was announced. Ultimately what persuaded me against it was that I estimated it would cost me the same as a 1D MkIII and there wasn't such a huge amount to gained by it. Realistically there aren't too many major differences when it boils down to it. Same eye still looking through the viewfinder and all that.

My first SLR was a Pratika with a screw in lens mount, the second one was a pentax and then I traded both of them in + lens for a Canon EOS 3000 which I stil have and then there's my new baby which is my first DSLR Canon 40D

My first real camera was a Konica , and I hated it , never had more than one lens for it and switched to Canon for my next one , When it came to digital , I bought a 20D , first digital SLR , held out for a good while as a film purist till it could be upheld no longer.

Now I have a caseload of canon lenses so its Canon digital most of the time now , with the occasional very expensive and frustating roll of ilford and Velvia shot on the old film cameras. ( frustrating in the sense of getting them developed that is).

I have a bucket of money for a newer model ( saved from being off the smokes ...so its all mine ) and dont know whether to jump for the 40D or wait for the successor to the 5D.

Back in the day my Dad had a film SLR, so I used to play around with that.. I think it was a pentax. Can't remember exactly. (Must try and dig that camera out next time I'm home!)

My Dad got a kodak P&S around 2001 (a whopping 1.3 MP :D )... I used that when I was on my J1 and it took some nice pics. Decided to buy one when I got home and went for a Canon P&S. Can't remember the exact model though. It was on of the Digital Ixus.

In 2004 I got the Canon Powershot A80. Quality P&S camera that has taken some really nice pics. Still use it as my backup P&S.

I'd been mulling around checking out DSLRs for about a year or so and pretty much decided on the Canon EOS 400D, so when I was in Japan in April of this year I nabbed one over there for about half the price. Got the standard 18-55mm lens and a 55-200mm lens thrown in... Nice... Quality camera..

Canon all the way from here on in for me I reckon. Nice cameras to use. Simple functions and I like that you can use manual settings on the good P&S models as well..

My next step is to invest in a nice macro lens i think!
