Im heading to the Huntington Beach/Newport Beach area. It means im close enough to San Diego, Los Angelas and Las Vegas to give them all a visit. Plus im on a beach. What more do u want:D

Haven't been there but the Irish haven't got a good name there, I know that much!

Chicago is supposed to be good

Heard we dont have a great name in San Diego too. Anywhere good that has a beach and the Irish are liked!?

Why do you want to go where everyone else is? Take a stand, go somewhere off the beaten (and tired) J1 track. Anywhere listed above has been ruined by previous generations of J1'ers and Irish students are now hated in those places.

San Diego - gets stiflingly hot, you won't be able to move. Also overrun by J1 students and housing and jobs will be really hard to come by.
Santa Barbara - Paradise, in my opinion. I've never been anywhere more beautiful. However, you'll probably be living in Isla Vista which is far away from the town. SB is also VERY expensive.
San Francisco - Prohibitively expensive, tbh. Plus, it's ALL hills. Really, really steep hills.

I don't know anything really about outside California. If you do go to California, why don't you try somewhere new? Or go to Seattle! It's supposed to be amazing!

I spent last summer in Hawaii and would definitely recommend it.

San Diego isnt stifling hot at all, I dunno where youre getting that. Of all the places I've been in America in the last few summers it was by far the most comfortable climate wise in July/August.(San Diego, LA, Vegas, Myrtle Beach, Chicago, New York, Miami)

The Irish are hated with a passion though, getting accomodation is an absolute nightmare. And you've to deal with regular evictions. The bars there are also the strictest in the states, it was the only place I've been to that I couldnt get served with fakeID. Buuuut despite all that its absolutely fantastic..lovely beaches, so close to TJ, lovely weather...

Its definately worth visiting for one summer anyway I'd say, itd be my top choice out of any of those cities in the poll. Think I might be going off the beaten track and going to Austin or somewhere similar where there'll be no Irish whatsoever this summer though, should be a nice change from the last few summers. Its nice to run into Irish on holiday but being surrounded by them nonstop can be a bit...odd.

I know Hawaii would be fantastic but is it not really expensive and hard to find jobs/earn good money?

I heard it from all my friends who were in San Diego this year. Of course it's going to be more tolerable than the places you mentioned due to it being right on the coast and having a breeze from the pacific.

LA, Chicago & New York: Huge cities with tall buildings trapping the heat.
    Vegas: Middle of the desert.
Miami: In Florida. Florida's peak season is winter, nobody goes there in the summer if they can avoid it, due to the humidity.

But compared to a lot of other destinations, it would feel stifling.

Hawaii is the poorest state in the US, with a huge rate of unemployment. If the locals can't find jobs, I'd say it's pretty hard for people on J1's.

Well I was in San Diego this year for most of mid-May till late August(a week spent in Vegas and LA inbetween in July/August too) and I can assure you it wasnt stifling at all. Even at its warmest in late July/early August it wasnt far off the hottest days of summer in Ireland, about 35C. I'm not sure what other major j1 destinations you can name that would have colder weather in summertime, SD is widely known as being quite mild due to its seabreeze...

The weather really shouldnt be a consideration in your J1 anyway, nearly all of the major American/Canadian destinations will have great weather(in comparison to Ireland at least) all summer, even the most humid/hot places can be gotten used to with a bit of time. Well, apart from Vegas..Vegas is just stupidly hot.

I have friends who were in Hawaii who said it was lovely location wise but a bit quiet for their liking..not enough big house parties / big nightclubs. I'm not sure what island they were on though, they mightnt have been on whichever the capital one is.

san fran might be a wee bit more expencive ( we're not talking dublin prices here at all!!!) but you earn a higher wage there than you will anywhere in california. while people in san diego are earning 8 or 9 bucks an hour, in san fran you would be getting 14 or 15. its far more fun aswell because the city is so small you will never be on a bus/taxi for long, everything is less than 25 mins away, hot days with cool mornings and evenings, along with the fact that north california is a far more welcoming and fun place to stay, its not like south where the irish are hated, they ****ing love us in san fran!! it is the perfect location in america.

Chicago is amazing, plenty of pubs and jobs, spent a summer there and loved it!

I was in Santa Barbara this summer, its beautiful but expensive, not sure what it'd be like for jobs.

San Diego is meant to be beautiful.
