    Hi all,
Hope this is in the right place.

Basically I work for a large company in Dublin with over a thousand pc's
    and various other systems.

We have been told there are outsourcing companies
coming in this week to have a look around.

First off has anyone been through the whole outsourcing thing?

Also how many day to day IT support staff would you thinkk is acceptable to be supporting this amount of user and systems?

Depends on the systems you are running and the complexity of said systems.
Although be very careful about outsourcing. They will not provide as high a level of support as an internal IT dept, especially if its a big one starting with I.
Outsourcers will do anything you ask them to and they rotate their engineers. This is very bad for internal company security. I would never trust outsourcers unless there was a high level internal tech supervising them. This has been learned by experience.

Service level agreements (SLAs) with outsourcers have to be very carefully thought through and laid out. Outsourcing is a challenge, both to undertake initially, and to manage going forward.

I would be commenting on it from my experiences being an outsourced contractor and from trying to pick up the pieces of an IT infrastructure in a company that used to outsource.

Outsourcers will use your company to initiate their staff, they will then move their staff onto bigger once off projects that earn them more once they prove themselves.

Staff in certain outsourced environments need to call their helpdesk in India, which leads to much frustration and delayed reactions.

Thanks fior the replies guys, well being one of the people who might be let go I was asking how many do you think should support so much as at the moment we have for and we a re stretched out already so how an outsourcing company could do it cheaper is beyond me.

They pay badly and charge a lot. An outsourcing company cannot do it cheaper. They can charge 150-400 a day for an onsite support body. It does depend what they are supporting though.
Although I havent seen a company who hasnt regretted outsourcing.

Hi Goose, Going back to your question,

    You have over a Thousand PC's -

    How many locations?
What OS's are in the environment Windows, Linux, Unix, Solaris, OS400?
    What are the main applications?
How many servers onsite & colocation?
How many IT staff are currently onsite?

There is a mountain of other questions but this would give us a fair idea.

    Cheers, Joe
