Can't argue with the out list (well obviously Long will be back in). Still no place for Weso, though I don't hold out much hope.

i think its a strong squad which is annoying coz it might as well be a freindly!
if ireland was anyway mentally stable he'd be the first name on the team by now!

Well Givens has certainly put his row with Stokes behind him. He must have been impressed with him for the U21s a couple of weeks ago. I thought he looked good against England.

    About ****ing time!
I've nothing against the lad but he has no place in a full Irish squad at the moment and his inclusion by Staunton (and Devlin:rolleyes:) stunk to be honest.

Interesting that Givens included Stokes at the expense of others. Stokes has messed hiom around in the past.

Any one else think that Don Givens shouldn't be let near the full senior squad and that we'd be better off letting one of the FAI tea ladies look after the team for this match?

No Weso is an absolute thundering disgrace when dross like Douglas is in the squad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,335 ✭✭✭smackbunnybaby

even when staunton was experimenting with young players Glenn Whelan was never called into the full squad

And considering that the match means absolutely nothing too.

Eirebhoy should you not have (again) after Stephen Carr?

when i saw the squad, i just knew this post would be here! totally agree desmond, cant believe that douglas is near an irish squad. btw, how is weso playing lately? as good as last season?

There are better Irish players in the lower leagues than Douglas.

Still, I think we can put 11 players out that should compete with most teams.

Does the Eircom League count as a lower league as well? :)

I think there must be some sort of a typo in the first two posts, Wes Hoolahan isn't there.

Yeah, because Andy O'Brien can defend! McShane is already a far better player than O'Brien ever was and himself and Dunne are the best we have.

McShane is the ginger Phil Babb. I saw him against Cyprus and he was flip-flopping around the place like John Kerry at a policy debate.

O'Brien and Dunne at the back were about the only thing Kerr got right during his time as manager and the sooner they're working together the sooner we can draw a line on the defence and start concentrating on roping in some decent midfielders to replace the dead wood we currently posess.

Phil Babb always needed an organiser beside him. McShane can play beside the brain dead John O'Shea. McShane is an excellent reader of the game. All you need to do is look at his games against Koller and Berbatov just to see that. He's definitely prone to a roasting from a nippy Bellamy/Miller/McDonald type player (sorry, thinking Celtic atm) but he'll get better with experience. Bellamy embarrassed Vidic and Cannavaro has struggles against direct players too but you certainly can't question their reading of the game.

Dunne and McShane is simply miles better than Dunne and O'Brien. Dunne still isn't the greatest organiser in the world. O'Brien needs an organiser beside him. Look at how O'Brien did beside O'Shea vs Holland. McShane doesn't necessarily need an organiser and himself and Dunne compliment each other very well.

Dunne at 21 would have been a bombscare beside John O'Shea too.

btw - O'Brien and Cunningham was Kerrs central defensive pair. Cunningham would get the best out of anyone and it was an excellent partnership.

Can't see why Steven Reid was included, he is only back after a year out injured and has played an hour for Blackburn Reserves,

I don't think Mr. Hughes will be too happy considering he ruled out rushing Reid back to replace the injured Savage and possibly injured Mokoena.

As others have said i can't see why Douglas is included ahead of others.

Of course Steven Reid should be included. On his day he's the best midfielder we have. The game is meaningless really so it's no harm to reintroduce a guy back into the set up after so long away. Sure they mightn't even play him if he's not fully right. We're gonna need him for the next campaign so get him involved now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,330 ✭✭✭✭loyatemu

so Carr has retired again? Did he actually play for us between his first retirement and this latest one?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,414 ✭✭✭kraggy

Why is Alan Lee not in the squad?

8 goals this season. Scored again at the weekend.

Most importantly, he's a regular scorer. Not sporadic.

He Isn't fully right, that's the whole point. And the injury he has just recovered from was picked up in training - he'd have a rating of 20 in injury proneness in Football Manager.

The fact that the game is meaningless is my whole point on why he shouldn't be there.

Wouldn't be surprised to see him pick up a slight knock for blackburn and have to pull out. It's not like if he doesn't turn up now the next manager will overlook him.

He didnt say explicitly, but he essentially indicated the situation was that Ireland knew there was a game coming up, he didnt make himself available and Givens wasnt going to go chasing him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,894 ✭✭✭Nunu

Givens was at the City v Sunderland game. Obviously there was no inclination on Stephen Irelands part to have a chat with him.
I think Givens has handled this well. The onus is on Ireland to declare himself available again and he would have known Don was at the game but chose not to seek him out.

Mark Hughes has said that there's not a chance Stephen Reid will be released to play for Ireland.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,894 ✭✭✭Nunu

    Seems Keogh wasn't dropped.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/w/wolverhampton_wanderers/7083232.stm
Wolves striker Andy Keogh is to have minor surgery on his groin during the upcoming international break.
Keogh has been omitted for the Republic of Ireland squad for the forthcoming game against Wales and will use the time off to have the operation.

He told the club's website: "I think the gaffer had a word with the Irish people to let them know I wouldn't be available for selection.

"I should be out in a day so I don't envisage missing Wolves matches."

Bale is now out of the Welsh squad as well as Bellamy and Koumas is a doubt afer missing Wigans last game.

should be a fairley weak welsh side
