I am already a subscriber to NTL broadband, but am looking to convert my connection to a wireless one - has anyone had any experience in doing this themselves, or should I just save time (and spend money) on getting NTL to organise this?

    Hi

very easy to do, you just need a Router and a wifi enabled PC/Laptop.

You just plug the NTL modem to the router, connect by cable (for initial setup) the Router to PC and follow the instruction.

make sure that you setup WPA security and hide the SSID so no one near can use your broadband.

    Regards

Be sure to power off and on your cable modem when you connect it to the router.

Linksys are pretty good routers, there are lots to choose from generally.

The good old Linksys WRT54G is perfect for this.... That is exactly the setup I have with NTL BB and it works a treat.

You would actually be far, far quicker doing this yourself than waiting for NTL to come out :D

I have a nice small linksys that does the job nicely. When you're looking at routers, you'll pay more for ones with an ADSL modem installed so look for one without it.

This is the one I have:

It's like the newer little brother of the one you link above. Probably has less range on it, but it works fine for me. I have it in the front of the house beside the TV and can pick it up fine at the back of the garden and upstairs.

You take the one ethernet coming from the NTL modem and bung it into the "internet" port on the Linksys.

I'm fairly sure Dabs has them for a few quid cheeper, but they are all around the €59-€69 range from various vendors. There are a few different options ( G, GS etc. ) but any of that family will do the trick for you.

any particular recommendation on wireless ethernet cards, or will any do?

If you're buying a linksys router, you may as well buy a linksys card. Any of the big names tend to make good kit though - Linksys, D-Link, Belkin, Cisco

Guys/Girls you have been brilliant in helping this old dog out.

Time to start getting rid of some of those nasty cables :)

edit: nevermind, I can presume this is also part of what I need

If you get a Linkysys Router you can get a USB Linksys Ethernet key. It has a special configuration setup to enable it to setup really easily with Linksys Routers (ridiculously so).
I've got an NTL connection and a Linksys wireless router and it was pretty much a case of plugging it in and getting a connection almost immediately.

Make sure it is an ethernet WAN model and NOT a built in ADSL Modem version router. Anything with built in ADSL port is no use for NTL cable modem

we got WRT54GP2 from Blueface about 2 years ago and ditched the Eircon line... still going good...

    moving to wireless...

Ok got everything sorted, however since I am with NTL and I am using the wireless router, etc - what kind of security to the profile on the linksys wireless do I need to add?

    WEP
    WPA-Personal
    PSK2
    LEAP

or is that something I dont have to worry about?

oh crap - now I have borked something up :)

I was messing with the security settings and now I have no connection, etc. I cannot even access the local ip for the router.

Is there anyway to "reset" a wireless network, or remove it.

    any ideas?

Heh, yeah we've all been there.

There are two ways to sort it:

    1. Get an ethernet cable and plug yourself directly into the router - encryption settings don't apply over the wired connection.
    2. All routers have a factory reset button somewhere. Check the manual.

As for actually setting security, I would recommend one of the WPA protocols - TKIP or PSK. The problem with setting security for the wireless is that you can get kicked off. Configure the security using the wired connection and then try to connect wirelessly. When you get connected and get an IP address, you can disconnect the cable.
