Sorry I didn't realise this was online only. Change my vote from "winning some" to "break even".

Well it would be "winning some" if I hadn't lost the $100 I made playing headsup games on PPP (during the boards headsup championships) playing blind omaha. :D

I really don't play much online I guess....

I replied but didnt read it correctly and voted creaming it.I have lost online the past 12months infact I have only cashed out a significant sum(relatively) once in my online adventures thus far.I do however adopt a spin up strategy-which is predestined for busto-Im pretty optimistic I would still have lost if Id adopted real bankroll management.

This reminds me of the scene in Shawshank redemption where some crim is asked what he did to get inside. He replies Nothing- lawyer screwed me.Its much the same concept as poker-NOBODY EVER LOSES.

I lost sooooooo much money playin online up to about the middle of this year it was criminal. Id lodge 200 just to play a 200 freezeout or 300 or whatever, id lodge money to play cash, play too high run it up and just blow it.

It makes me cringe to think how much i gave away.

But thankfully im a bit cleverer now, not making millions but 5 winning months now, like i say nothin massive but enough

I'm winning some (emphasis on the some!!), but with a full time job, it's very difficult to put in any decent amount of hours while playing well, tuned in and ready to play. I think you'll find this when you get started.

Another thing you may not have thought about is how much more mentally draining on-line is to Live, just think about the number of hands you'll be playing.

Say in 1 hour Live you might play 30 - 40 hands.

Online in the same time if you play even 3 tables, you'll get on average 70-100 hands an hour per table so you'll be playing between 200 and 300 hands, in the same time.

I might move this post over to your other thread, as it's not really relevant here...

I started playing in July, and I've worked hard since. I'm a winning small stakes ($11 avg) tournament player, with ROI of about 30%. I started playing cash I guess about a month or two ago and I've spun up from $10nl to $50nl with one deposit.
I'd say I've invested about 300euro in poker and my total bankroll will be approaching $2k once my current bonus clears.
A fairly poor hourly rate, but I'm still a greenhorn. I hope to be able to beat $100nl in the new year so I can afford to buy into a small WSOP event and work towards $200nl, but I rushed through the micro-stakes because the actual earnings were pretty pathetic and I didn't care enough about the sums involved to play optimally. I'll happily play at $100nl for a long time, as beating it represents a nice hourly rate.

i'm up and down like a yoyo in cash games at the moment. up 10 buy ins, down 20, up, down. thank god for tournaments where at least there is a profit which comfortably offsets cash losses

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,004 ✭✭✭pok3rplaya

Well it's kinda hard to answer this question. I cream some levels and lose at others. And I've played them all over the course of the last year.

I win a little in both cash and SNG. But I don't have enough time to apply myself seriously to the game. Jesus you think I would be sick of it by now. I have only ever made one deposit on both the sites I play on.

    Role on the online ban...lol
If i knew how to control bankroll and not donk my chips off at takin shots at higher levels i`d make a small few quid. PLus i think the tilt i`m on for my flopped straight flush losing to a runner runner higher striaght flush being the main contributary to my losing online which happened a while back.

other way for me although would not call 6k creaming it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,437 ✭✭✭luckylucky

I've put down creaming it, but it's alll relative really. I certainly haven't made my fortune yet from this game so if i was in a bit more of a humbler frame of mind I could have just as easily chosen winning some.;) If there was something in the middle of winning some and creaming it i woulda picked that.

My online year is going a lot like it did last year. First 6-7 months = really good. Last couple of months = :(

The last month or two has left me down about 1k online.

I think a big reason for this is that i've been playing too many restrictively short sessions in recent months, an hour here and there.

Any times recently where i've been able to sit at a table for more than 2 hours have been pretty productive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,924 ✭✭✭shoutman

I put down break even, but at the moment I'm a winning player and have been over the last 10k hands, the only reason I was losing before was because I was ****e, messy, spewy and didnt take it at all seriously.

I cream it 80% of the time but 20% of the time I play poker like a poo flinging chimp.

I intend to have all neurological impulses linked to the tilt side of my brain removed

and a breathalyser installed on my laptop

    and apply some BRM skills

once I get that out of the way, I'll be creaming it....

Last guy nailed it on the head...Dont donk away at a level you cant afford, Bankroll management is exactly how I make my money, I can play poker at a decent level and am not afraid to put in the cash if I feel I have the best of it but playing at a Level you cant afford or using your entire bankroll is STUPID and YOU WILL GO BROKE, nobody is that LUCKY!! You may clean up once or twice but in the end whether its a bad beat or you make a move at the wrong time you will be cracked!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,201 ✭✭✭Macspower

I think there should be one more catageory which is consistant winner....... don't think i'm in any of the above... I certainly not creaming it in my eyes.... and winning a bit doesn't really do it for me either... somewhere in between i think...

used to consistently win a bit, when the money really mattered (playng low stakes) and then ive gone full circle to work hard to build it up and spunk it in one session, im really good at that. losing a bit recently, prob evens overall, gotta stop playing like a bored monkey

I am voting winning some. I am up at every level but it's not exactly spectacular sums of money. I am just lucky I am a natural bankroll nit who doesn't really megatilt or play drunk ever.

I ran like sonia o sullivan when she was 25 for the month of oct, spun an almost 0 bankroll into a well rolled 1/2. Now i run like the langer now :). I am up for the year though. So winning some.

i was so tilted by some idiot yesterday that i shoved 20 consecutive hands hu and was down 12 BI at the table at one point. Eventually finished down 7BI before he quit.

My earlier post was an exaggeration. From creaming it to winning some is a fairer reflection.I think I won about 5500 last month which was fairly depressing as I played about 20000 hands.

how can u say that winning 5500 was depressing after playing 20k hds ,in that amount of hds u must have went through the ups and downs of poker and still up 5,5k not bad i say . i be happy with that every month .:D:D:D:D

these polls are always lol. I bet you could conduct this poll in any cardroom in the world and get similar distribution of answers. Or in a bookies or among people who daytrade forex or any other form of gambling.

Probably, but to be fair poker players who frequent forums are going to be on average better than the whole poker playing population as a whole. I wouldn't rule out that there are plenty of genuine winners here, also i'm sure that many boardies who realise they are losers were not so inclined to vote.

No doubt it's still probably skewed a bit on the positive side, but this poll is perhaps a more reasonably accurate reflection of the respondees than it might first appear to the more cynical amongst us :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,083 ✭✭✭RoundTower

I don't think people are being deliberately dishonest. But there probably aren't 106 voters who keep detailed records. And the wonderful thing about gambling is that if you don't keep excellent records it's really easy to think you are a smaller winner or you break even when you are a big donator.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,854 ✭✭✭zuutroy

This got me thinking. Who's the average $50nl/$100nl losing player? Are they mostly just people who play home games, but have never read a poker book and are fooled into thinking they're not too bad by variance, people who watch WSOP and like the look of it, or are they people who read books, 2+2 etc, but it just doesn't sink in. On the other hand, maybe there's just a turnover of bad players who play for a couple of months, lose and quit and they're replaced by some newcomers who suffer the same fate. This would suggest that eventually poker will go the same way as Betfair, where the edges are razor thin and it will become exceptionally difficult to win consitently. I don't really understand where the money comes from. I mean if I go bust, after the work I've put in, I'll realise I'm just no good and give up....but who are the people that pay us!

Yeah I understand what you're saying and I realise you weren't saying people were dishonest but that some were a bit deluded. I agree that these type of polls are always going to be a false representation for the reasons you mentioned. On the other hand many boardies are online players, the records for most of them are staring them in their face. Combined with that and the fact that (average boardie poker player > average from poker playing population as a whole ) and a higher proportion of actual winning boardies responded as opposed to losing boardies it's probably nowhere near as skewed in terms of actual respondemnts to poll as going into a casino in Dublin and asking the same question.

Jeez I really need to get playing, have hardly played a hand of poker past few days :p
