The rating of windows: how to avoid the Advertising Standards.

In August 2007, I read a piece in the IT which claimed that a certain window manufacturer had the only A rated window in Ireland. You can guess which one, they do even less than our TD's

    A bcd E fghijklm N O pq R S T uvwxyx

I complained to the Advertising Standards Authority and I got my reply today:

<<The article in question was not an advertisment so the code does not apply>>

However the same people ran a radio advert in October 2006 which did warrant a reprimand.

    The text is attached.

    This extract is of interest:
<<They said that the BFRC, on behalf of the UK glazing industry and its European partners was the only agency allowed to rate windows in the British Isles.>>

They have not read the Belfast Agreement or the Proclamation.

    Nice one ircoha.

Out of interest, I assume the company in question never got told who made the complaint?

About time someone made a stand! - there's a lot of this goes on - but getting CONFIRMED performances of windows in Ireland is almost impossible!
By the way - Building COntrol in N Ireland will NOT accept the BRFC rating - in any case the rating can not be input into SAP (Eng & Wales version of DEAP - but is soon to be upgraded to do so - along with allowing a variance for Thermal Bridging input generally - Y values)

SINNER BOY - I can give you a similar rated house in ANY construction material Concrete/Timber Frame/Steel Frame etc - the U-values for each when it comes to walls can match the others.

I think we are on the same page Ardara1 . The " concrete built is better built" and " build your A rated concrete home" to me are slogans that are so oversimplified that they are potentially arguably misleading . Like the 20's "guiness is good for you" ads .

Yes argued from a point of view the slogans are not actually false but they are the very least heavily "spun" .

well another well-known radio advertiser ran a campaign for their treatment plants, in which they decried septic tanks, and inferring septic tank users were polluting in breach of regulations, that you were devaluing your homes etc etc.

I got really pissed, everytime I heard it, so I comlained to the NSAI, and my complaint was upheld, and the ad got pulled.

I do love it when a plan comes together........:D

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

WHAT Guiness - it's not good for you?!! -

There's a number of green journalists in the UK are awarding 'Eco-Bollox' awards to those manufacturers/commentators that come up with such 'green wash' - may I suggest you start a start a new judging panel!

    Are you sure?
I have seen a growing trend lately, (in all papers:tabloid, broadsheet and freebie), where an advertisment is set out in such a way (headline, columns, font size etc) that it looks like a newspaper article. A quick read through the article and somebody that has any knowledge of the industry in question (not construction btw) can spot that its only an ad. These ads pi$$ me off, as alot of the general public consider the IT or the Indo a credible paper. Its approaching a situation of sale to the highest bidder a la Murdock.
