two of my favourite movies are Eternal Sunshine of a spotless mind and True Romance, despite the fact that generally i dont like love story movies which these clearly are. Love stories had always fallen into two categories for me Rom-Com and chick-flick, but these movies changed how i looked at the entire genre.

Movies that dont follow the usual conventions of their genre are often the groundbreaking and better ones IMO no matter what genre they are in as they give you an entire new perspective on a subject. can anyone suggest other genre changing movies like these.

edit: to avoid this being another list thread please try and mention how they are genre changers

In before the Karl: "Save the Green Planet". It's a sci-fi/comedy/horror/romance/drama genre hybrid switching between the genres effortlessly and yet remaining a good example of each. There's moments of sadness, followed by laughter, followed by squeamish horror. Check out the many threads we've raved about it for more...

But 'Eternal Sunshine' wasn't JUST a Rom-Com. It had elements that could've easily qualified it for other genres also. The Memory Eraser is obviously sci-fi, The constant fleeing the eraser could mean it's a chase movie etc ...

Same with 'True Romance'. It's a gangster movie. It's a love movie. It's a road movie (I think, it's been a while), but you get my point.

I'm not sure that many films nowadays are just straight genre from start to finish. Many mix and match and all the better for it (usually- Not a big fan of the 'In Space' cop out in some series to 're-invigorate' the franchise. I'm mostly looking at Jason X) but I think that the use of this mixing might negate your question.

Metropolis I suppose invented the future oppressive sci-fi type film. A lot of sci-fi's have borrowed from it and its definitely groundbreaking.
