I'm just wondering, when I do sit-ups, you know the way some people put their hands to the side of their head or they put their hands across their chest, well I tend to "push out" as I sit up and then bring my hands back in towards my chest when I lower back to the ground. Is this an "incorrect" way of doing sit-ups. I'm just conscious of putting a strain on my back or something so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers!

Also do sit-ups burn any calories? How many per 50 sit-ups would you say?

Not many calories I am afraid.
My advice, try and keep your fingertips level with your temple('hands to the side of your head').The way you are doing them sounds like you are using your arms to pull your body up.i.e.you make it easier on yourself by kind of 'jumping' when you raise yourself...
Anyway,my opininon is YES you are putting strain on your lower back by 'jolting' up rather than keeping it controlled.(I really don't blame you if you are confused.I just can't explain properly what my theory is!)

Just don't push out and DO NOT put your feet under anything as this works your legs more than your abs and just puts pressure on your back..

Thanks a mil for the advice. Yea, how you described it is exactly what I was doing because "it was easier" so I'll try your way next. Thanks a mil!

They're not that important in terms of fitness/health - the abs, in conjunction with the back muscle's main role is to keep your body rigid to support movement (like a weight overhead/in your arms).

Any sort of weight held overhead by necessity activates the core muscles. Shoulder presses and overhead squats will help build your core.
