Folks,

Our house is due to be blocklayed starting next week and we are just looking at insulation for it. We are going with a 5" cavity and we were planning on having it pumped with polypearl or something to that effect.
However my cousin, who is plastering the house for us, mentioned that if it were him he would leave the cavity empty and use dry lining slabs on the inside walls.
What are your thoughts on this? Wouldnt this have an impact on the option of hanging pics on the wall, the chance that someone could damage the slab once it's up? We have a week to make a decision so Id like your thoughts or opinions on this.

From my experience you might consider the following;
1. Skirtings will need timber on blockwork to get good fixing.
2. Radiators will also need supports or special fixings as DRy lining won't support them.
3. I found that doors opening onto Kingspan boards are easily dented by hanles as Polyurethane behind plasterboard is soft. Doorstops will be needed.
4. All window jambs, Heads and even cills will need to be insulated to avoid cold bridging.
5. The condensation question has been discussed on recent similar threads.

I prefer timber frame myself for a whole range of reasons. But Good luck anyway.

My view is fill the cavity, and make sure u have proper cold bridging details across the cavity at windows doors etc.

which I just finished reading. I have always been aware, when renovating old buildings, of the need for buildings to breath. But this article also highlights the dangers inherent in Timber frame construction where moisture passes through openings in Vapour barrier and condenses externally thereby eventually causing failure of TF.
