I know that this is like asking for help to change a fuse........ When I was trying to turn off my iMac, I logged out by mistake and now I am just getting a blank screen even after turning it off and on with the power switch. Please help this noobie!

You mean a grey screen? Is it even starting up?

It was starting up and I was getting a blue screen ie a blank screensaver. Eventually it rebooted osx after I pressed various combinations of keys but I'm not sure what I did to achieve this. Would therefore still value knowing how to resolve it if it happens again

Pull the plug out of the machine. And put it back in again. Restart.

Thanks. I was turning it on and off with the power switch. But I needed to disconnect the power completely. Correct?

If you were pressing the power button, are you sure you were killing the power (press and hold for 10 sec) rather than just putting the machine to sleep (press and release)?

Aha!! That's probably it. I was just doing "press and release". On one occasion I must have held it in for long enough to kill the power and cause it to reboot at the power on.

    Thanks everyone.
