So far excellent, the kid on the bed is not.

    /edit 10k !!! No. Not a bit of it.

Kid on the bed wins the 10k

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,784 ✭✭✭Dirk Gently

Thought the two kids on the beach should have won it, or the angler. last pic was class too, reflection of girlie in the fountain.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,849 ✭✭✭Redisle

yea I thought the silhouette with the people looking into the rock pool should have won.. the one that did win didnt seem all that great to me..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 679 ✭✭✭Eye

missed the first few shots there :(

thought that the last shot was very good with the girl posing and all the reflectons, a worthy winner of the 10k, but the kid on the bed
    did'nt see that coming

The Spire one was excellent. The rest? Nothing spectacular. And some - e.g.the Riverdance one- seemed technically poor as far as I could see. And €10k for the baby looking at the cheap print of the Creation of Man? Maybe it's just me but I didn't think it was that strong an image.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,200 ✭✭✭kensutz

Really like the Spire one and Thirdfox, that pic of your sis was really good. Well done on winning the €1000.

I'm selling shot of my two year old in her pampers for 8K anyone intrested, that photo has got to be the worst of the twelve,

The Spire and the Diver and dolphin were excellent.

The hurler and dancers looked poor to me, but congrats to all that won.

Well done third fox...was a good pic

The Winner- i dont think was a deserved photo. i think the Hurler was a spectacular shot....pure capture the moment....The diver was nice.....if it was a painting...

I liked the little girl jumping in the puggles too,,,,and....I have to say the spire was a fabulous shot.

NOW.......that chap that was judging the photos......WHO THE FCUK WAS HE.... I've never heard so much Bullsheet in all my life about describing something.... another one of these "professionals" RTE plucked from nowhere......prob won a few awards by "networking "

rant over.....i'm after drinking a few too many hot toddys tonight....**hic** nite alll....:D

    Tom Lawlor,

Was a decent enough press photographer in his day.

Was working to a brief from the bank though and said as much at the start.

    Ah Crap - I guess I didn't win so.. :)

Are they online? (too lazy/sore to google..) Thirdfox - congrats in order? A grand? Whe-hey!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,110 ✭✭✭Thirdfox

In fact after looking at all the great shots that were chosen I don't know how mine made it up there too... I loved the Spire one - a really unique perspective on such a cliqued photographic object. And the dolphin shot was out of this world.

Thought that it might have been a joke when my photo didn't come up after 9/10 pictures. Heartbeat had risen to a few hundred bpm!

I'll take constructive criticism on my photo (I know it's not spectacular) - just be kind to my sister though ;)

    edit:
I wonder did eas' photo make it into the final? There were a few with children in them...

The girl in the puddles I thought was the best. Or the Hurler

That's a new one on me. Too sore to google!

Bugger, I didn't win and I had the 10k spent already. Too busy in the pub lowering pints to watch though. Chip butties are God's own food.

    Yum.

Agree the spire and the dolphin were top class, but I think the comp suffered from a lack of focus of theme (probably deliberate on the bank's part) to entice us to give them our dosh.

What a load of complete and utter ****e!! Every other photo was better than the winner!! Well done thirdfox. But Lawlor sold his soul to the divil (RTE). Very depressing!

The hurler for me too BTW.
Just shows, doesn't it? One persons opinion.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,458 ✭✭✭✭gandalf

Hmm are these up online yet. I entered a shot of the Spire myself would love to see what the one that was chosen looked like.

Thirdfox at this stage you might as well give us a goo at the shot that got you a grand :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,744 ✭✭✭deRanged

Today's Examiner (p8) has a few of them.

I really liked the reflection one, which isn't in the paper.
I must also say that I wasn't impressed with the justifications for each choice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,110 ✭✭✭Thirdfox

Oh? What page is it on? What was the article about?

sadly no. My hopes had dwindled as the hours passed.

Well done again Thirdfox, to get into the final with "thousands" of entrants says everything about the quality of your shot.

Ill admit that i was a bit surprised at the overall winner, but do think that it is an exceptionally good photograph. I think it demonstrates that a photographs narrative is more important than it's technical perfection.

for what it's worth, this was my entry. I think I may have posted it here before..

Page 8. of the Examiner. oops!
it's just a few of the photographs, mentioning that the calendar will be on sale in Halifax branches from mid december.

Thanks everyone for the pats on the back - they're much more valuable than the prize money :)

Here's the image that got selected (low res) - the "picture resizer" app for windows seem to use a very high jpeg compression algorithm...

Eas: that was a great photo - no surprise it made it into the short-list!

    Well done Thirdfox, nice pic.
    winner's pix are here.

BTW Ted did a very poor job of cloning out whatever was in the right hand side of his pic "Extra Person".... very shoddy. Nice pic otherwise.

Lol - eyes like an eagle! On closer inspection the PP is very obvious. Great image otherwise like you said.

ok i know nothing about photography but how the hell did that picture of the baby on the bed win? piss poor imo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 142 ✭✭crookesa

Nice photo thirdfox congrats again. Tis good to see someone from the board winning something.

I still can't imagine how the photo on the spire was taken, would be interesting to see a photo of how he got out there looks very thing at the top!!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,764 ✭✭✭Valentia

I dunno. The more I look at them the more depressed I get. There are some truly awful photos there :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,852 ✭✭✭Hugh_C

Just looked at the winning selection and was totally underwhelmed. (No offence Thirdfox).

The only stand-out for me was the camogie player, and even that was technically poor or had very dubious post production. It's way over-processed and won't reproduce well.

Dodgy cloning on Extra Person as others have said. Won't reproduce well unless it gets fixed.

As for the Spire, whoever took that shot has unique access to the structure and for that reason alone I would rule it out. If everybody had access to the top of the Spire, well then who knows ...

    Hugh

jaysus... he's right you know. That's fair depressing! Why do most of them look like they've been painted by an impressionist?

Another glory day for Irish amateur photography competitions! I'm closing my halifax account post haste!

    Agree Valentia,

    Depressing indeed.

Quality is dreadful in most, even the spire, which I thought looked great on the Tele is not great when you see it in reality.

He mentioned the help of the bank staff in the preamble so I presume the choices were made there.

    T.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,196 ✭✭✭PaulieC

it was an odd collection of winners alright, considering the brief, which was something like 'whatever gives you that bit Extra'.
Now I know people can interpret these things in different ways, but seriously, I'm at a loss to see how about 2/3 of those entries could be interpreted as giving you something extra. Now it may be that these things mean something special to those who took them, but then you could say that about 99% of the photos ever taken.

This was less a case of being a serious photographic competition than some publicity for Halifax and the huge prize fund bears that out. I suppose though, it was at least an attempt at a competition as opposed to the usual multiple-choice phone and text competitions that an amoeba could answer...

That shot was done by the photographer passing by and asking the cleaners of The Spire if he could get up and take a shot of Dublin. They told him he needed to do a Health & Safety course before he was allowed to go up on it. He did the course and gained permission to climb it for his shot.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,764 ✭✭✭Valentia

I always used to keep an eye out for Tom Lawlors pics in the Irish Times. They generally had that something extra. I don't know what has happened his critical faculties since though

Anyway I shouldn't be getting myself annoyed with this irrelevance. :(

That "Extra Person" really is a travesty though...............

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,458 ✭✭✭✭gandalf

Yikes some of those shots are very mediocre!!

Only 2 or 3 actually caught my interest the rest look like crap shots of "my kids" or holiday photos. Far better quality of shots posted on this forum daily.

that's bizarre. even with the course under his belt, why would they allow someone up there? i would have assumed that the insurance company would frown on that sort of attitude.

That's great fair play to them. But it seems so narrow up there and to get out that far to get the perspective down the spire would seem like you'd need to be not afraid of heights

Reeks of bull tbh. No insurance company (especially one in Ireland) would take on such a risk. No corporation workers with a double digit IQ would let the basically untrained guy do what's needed to get that shot. It's all well and good producing a health & safety cert to some guys on O'Connell street, but those guys would then have to get the OK from the boss (who'd say no) and even if the corpo did give permission, the insurance company would laugh at them and tell them to cop on. Or refuse cover. And without insurance cover, he wouldn't get any higher up the spire than he could jump. I can only imagine there's a wee bit more training required to climb a structure like that than a basic health & safety course provides.

Had to be someone who was working on it, either maintenance crew or the initial builders of the thing.

Has to have been one of the builders/crew, as you can still see the fencing off of the centre island (that was only there during the construction works)
