You're in the shop, and need a small item
The item in question is marked at 99c.
    You have a €1 coin.

Do you just throw the shopkeep the coin, take the good and await your shiny cent in return, or do you turn your back once you get your item after scanning and hand over the euro, deciding that you don't need such a ridiculous low value item taking up pocket space?

(In this case, you do not need the receipt)

Would you keep the cent? 123 votes

If you were a starving student, you would know the answer to that question!

I actually usually say if it's 1-5 cent "It's ok I don't need the change thanks"
I know they add up (And the ones I get I keep in a money box) but I really can't be bothered sometimes.
I know some people are going to say "you're giving the shop your money and they get enough of it" But really the odd few cents won't kill me.

On review of your poll - If I get the change I do tend to throw it in the charity box if there's one.
(the ones that I keep are usually when getting say 7.98 back or something - just toss it into the oul pocket)

If its less than 5c Id usually scurry off before they have the chance to give it back to me.. I hate those little 1 & 2c coins.. They just end up in the end of my handbag..

No way - i hate all those copper coins!!
I always just walk off after handing them over the €1 coin

I bagged up my mug of loose change last night and it totalled 43 euros. So yeah, give me my precious cent! ;)

For some reason I don't leave change if I'm in a corporate monolith store like Tesco. Don't mind so much if its a corner or independant shop.

I saved up my cents and got together enough to buy half a drainpipe and a roller skate which makes and ideal 'car' for my pet snake

Depends on the shop. The owner of one (rural) petrol station that I have to get petrol at sometimes always demands 1c if you have, say, €30.01 of petrol so I make damn sure I stand there and wait for her to hand over every last cent of my change!
But usually if I have any small denomination coins I would throw them into the charity box too.
My handbag is also full of them!

    really depends on circumstances

Out of habit i wait for change regardless of the amount. When I realise I've been handed a 1 cent coin I scurry out feeling cheap. Recently I was in a shop and the guy just shut the till, with me still waiting there for my whole 2 cent. At that point it was the principle of the matter. When he saw I was still there he sighed, opened the till and handed it to me.

    I wait for it.

Then I put all of my change in a change jar.

I used not to, but then my brother counted his own change one day.

He had one and a half grand. Paid for a PS3 and a holiday out of it.

Ditto, I do have a change char at home and a friendly local that will take all the coins of me if I bag them, so it pays for a night out every few months.

I wait for it out of habit.

Then i empty my groaning purse of all copper daily, into handy containers at home/work.

Once or twice a year I bag it all up and go to the bank, for a year I reckon it would come to about 50-60 squids

    Result :D

I do that too. Well into empty biscuit tins. I have 2 of them nearly full. I keep putting off counting it because I am trying to maximise the effect. I must get a load of money bags some weekend and count it all out. I also throw in all my 10s and 20s so I must be sitting on a gold mine. Goodbye working life.

No 1 cent coins over here. Just the 5 cents. I usually throw it in the poor box but if it's more than 5 cents it goes back in the wallet.

I always wait for it. I was actualy only thinking of this yesterday because I bought something in a shop for €2.69. I paid €2.70 and had to wait ages for the shopkeeper to give me my change because he had to open a new bag. I still waited though. If the shop had 200 customesr a day that left even 1c change behind they'd make €2 or over €700 quid a year. The same logic applies to me. If I keep my 1c and put it in my giant coke bottle money bank I'll be rich beyond my wildest dreams!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,397 ✭✭✭✭azezil

As much as I despise coppers, there has been occasion's when I've had to count them out for bus fare! So I'd probably wait for it

I think Holland has some by-law where businesses can ignore 1&2c coins. ie..if you stuff is 1.97, they'll give you 5c change out of a 2 euro coin. If its 1.98 they'll give you nuttin. As for waiting for the cent, its a bit ignorant to just turn and walk off on someone who goes and gets it outta the till. I usually just mumble something and then walk off.

    It's not a by-law per se.

Some countries don't produce 1c and 2c coins.

    This is the same is Australia and NZ. 1.96, 19.7 = 19.5, 1.98 1.99 = 2.00

    I wait for my change.
At the end of every day, I throw all my change into a jar. My dad does the same. We last counted it in August, before hols, and we had just over €1000! Counted there two nights ago and had €440! 1 cent coins made up €50!! But we do throw in alot of €1 & €2...

I think Ireland should get rid of the 1c and 2c coins. They are both utterly useless denominations of currency and annoying tiny coins to boot. The 5c is barely tolerable.

If I buy something for 99c or 1.99 and pay with a 1 or 2 euro coin then I'd not wait for the 1c. I'm normally gone before the cashier even opens the drawer so it's not like I'm wasting their time either. If there's a few coins in the change then I'd wait. Even leaving 1 and 2c coins behind on many occasions, I still accumulate a large tub of them each year. Last January I counted and bagged my 1, 2 and 5c coins and had over 100 euro in it. Took bloody ages to count, but was just about worth it. It's half full again now, so I think I'll give it a few months before counting again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,062 ✭✭✭dlambirl

I applaude all the people who put their change into a jar. I could maybe do it with just coppers but not with 20c or 50c never mind €1 or €2's?!! I'd be picking them out to pay for something!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 201 ✭✭coolhandc

people who wait for 1c change are sad creatures.
    there i said it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,480 ✭✭✭projectmayhem

usually don't wait around, but will say "throw it in the box" if there is a poor box. i know from working in a shop sometimes you'd go to give the 1c change and the person is gone. so just out of courtesy i'll tell 'em to throw it in the ISPCC etc. box.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,039 ✭✭✭✭Kintarō Hattori

Ahhh it's 50/50 really. Sometimes I'll take the change and sometimes I'll just pay for the goods and walk off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,112 ✭✭✭Blowfish

For me it depends on what it is I'm buying. If it's just random junk food or whatever I won't bother, but if I'm in somewhere like Argos or the like, I'll wait for the reciept, at which point they'll usually hand you the 1c or whatever at the same time.

    Right...

And people who don't wait for 1c change think too highly of themselves to deal in such small amounts of money.

If you feel embarrassed about waiting 10 seconds to get your 1c change, theres a little bit of a snob inside you.

Wait for my change & then into the charity box for the ISPCC. Somebody has to think of the babies. If that's not there then a cancer charity.

depends on my mood at the time, half the time might just say 'stick it in the box', rest of the time pop it in my money box, emptied it a few month ago, after bout 6 to 9 month, collected 150euro worth of 1, 2, 5, 10, and 20c peices

I usually wait for the cent. For some reason it feels rude to just walk out while the cashier is fumbling around in the till for it.

Act like your wating for the receipt, never mind the fact the change is only 1c :D

On another note, twice I have been in Xtravision, and the guy goes, I'll owe you 5c, after I hand him a tenner for something that came to 9.95. Both times I demanded credit on my receipt against future purchases :) Often times I have been in a shop where they don't think the 2c change matters. Do you think the petrol pump attendant or bus driver would let you off if you were short 2c ?

I always wait for my change, and feel ripped off if I don't get it, no matter how small the amount.

There are four kinds of responses to when I give people back 1 cent change.

1.) They tell me to stick it in the poor box. These people are true humanitarians. I can only begin to imagine the ungodly amounts of money that accumulate in these poor boxes due to their acts of pure generosity. It must be well over a euro by now.

2.) They wait for it. Generally these people look like they're about to die. They're either extremely old, or extremely unhealthy looking. They all seem to have yellow hands. They also complain about the prices, and some of them have large noses and have these weird curly locks.

3.) They tell me to keep it. Half the effort is getting the 1 cent coin out of the till. They're tiny coins and it can sometimes be very very awkward to get them out. They usually tell you once you have it in your hand that they don't want it. I don't like these people.

4.) They tell you to "shove it up your hole" as they walk out the door. They're similar to the guys who say they don't want it, except their clothes are filthy, they have limerick accents and they stink of shit. I don't mind these people so much because their general lifestyle can provide you with a laugh sometimes.

I saved these for a year and only had €7 at the end of it. WTF are ye doing to be able to go on hols and buy games consoles with your change? Are you putting EVERY coin in, up to and including the €2's?

After my ordeal, I now no longer wait and periodically dump the 1c and 2c coins. If Finland can survive without them, I don't see why we can't.
