DVD Drive Problem on Toshiba

I have a Toshiba Satellite A100 - OS Win XP.

I have a problem with the DVD Drive it seems to have an intermittent fault in reading discs -might read it today but might not tomorrow.

It's still in warranty and I have had a quick call to Toshiba Helpline and they have asked me to make a back-up of all files as I may need to use the Recovery Disc.

    My questions around this are:
    - Aside from the files I want to save (photos, docs, etc) how do I save my emails and is there any other files/programs that I should try to back-up?
    - Is it worth the effort of using the recovery disc and trying to sort any issues I may incur for the sake of DVD Drive?
    - If the recovery disc fails to solve the problem what are my options - post away for repair, new drive or new laptop?
    - Is it possible to get and fit a DVD drive for my Toshiba?
