Haven't been to this one for a couple of years. I stopped because I didn't fancy paying €10 (the Managing Director comes with me, God help her patience!) in to that cramped airless room. It did occur to me to pop along tomorrow though. What's it like since the recession kicked in?

Will be at the curragh tomorrow myself. Alot more going on. Shows etc.....:D Anyone else?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,273 ✭✭✭Morlar

From what I remember the last North Star one wasn't too bad, the usual mix of good and bad prices and items. I think it had a better attendance than the teachers club one too. I will be heading in with a couple of guys from other forums so if anyone wants to meet up for a beer upstairs after the event then send me a pm.

The Curragh show is on Sunday, Saturday is for vehicles and stalls setting up. So you can do both.

The show was the biggest I have seen yet and it was really fantastic to see ALL the clubs together in the one place sharing our hobby. I can only imagine what it will be like next year. The weather was grand and the public really loved it. There was something for all there and it was great to meet old friends after the long winter.
If everyone similiary supports future shows, no matter who hosts them or where they are, in the same genial way it will put Ireland on the map as a place that is alive with living history, re-enactment and a new venue for visitors outside Ireland that is well worth attending.
Mr Recession did not rear its ugly head, as you seen yesterday with the attendance of large crowds. When you looked into the eyes of the kids (and the fathers) as they strolled around the displays and stalls, you could see the magic, and plug into their buzz.
I don't know about the rest of you but today I feel like I was involved in a stampede, being the stampeedee and not the stampeeder. Upoading pictures and video as we speak and will post links later.
    Well done everyone concerned.
    Kind regards.
    Tom.

The 2010 annual auction to be held by the Medal Society of Ireland will take place on

Saturday 16th. October, 2010 at the Teachers Club Dublin

Last year the auction took place in the attractive surroundings of the Georgian Room behind the bar in the Teachers Club.

However due to the large numbers who attended this auction, it was suggested and decided at the AGM that we should revert to the hall (where the fiars and meetings are held) for 2010. Viewing will take place on the day of sale from 11:00-12:45 prior to the auction.

We are now inviting suitable lots for this fundraising event. For further information please contact the auction organiser - Austin Fennessy- email ozzyfennessy@eircom.net

Was at the military vehicles thing earlier on, nice vehicles around but got rained out of it. One militaria dealer there with some reasonably interesting pieces. Will post up some pics later.

Next one out of the bag is the Militaria Fair in Gorey on Saturday 26th of June from 10 to 3,30 There will be some re-enactors there, not sure about vehicles though. Its in the hall on the left at the top of the town. Hard to miss with displays out front and lads in uniform.
Carrigtwohill, Barry's Castle Cork event is on the weekend of 3 and 4 of July and is multi period medeval event but also includes ww1 and ww2 and later.

If you have any pictures of Duncannon or Leopardstown please give us a gander at them.
    Regards.
    Tom.

Gorey Militaria Fair was a great success. There were Germans, RIC, Black and Tans, Auxies, Americans from the 'Nam period, WW2 nurses, WW2 Yanks, Flying Column, Irish Army UN, vehicles and static displays there. Bargain of the day for me was a pair of brown leather lace up gaitors, in great nick, perfect for Flying Column, for 20 smackeroones
Next one out of the bag in Barryscourt Castle, Carrigtwohill in Cork next Saturday and Sunday. It will be a multi-period event with static displays, re-enactments etc. Promising to be the main hit is a battle between the Tans, Auxies, RIC, Flying Column and 'spy' hidden in the crowd, taken out and......well you will have to be there to find out.
The one after that will be Cork Gaol on the first weekend in August. Same type of thing as far as I know. I have no information regarding entrance fees for either.

Pics from the show. As its was early on Saturday. More words when I recover.

Beltring is next and the next gig out of the bag is Cork Gaol on the first weekend in August followed by Salute on the last weekend in August. Dont miss either of these shows. They never disappoint.
    Regards.

Thanks for posting them Tom,is the Carrigtwohill event annual??.I should of went there myself but it went clean out of my head.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,109 ✭✭✭enfield

Yes it is an annual event and as you can see it a multi period thing. Its gas at night time when the campfires are burning and different periods interact. On Friday night after a few vodkas and mead I got into a heated debate on the Brehon laws with a viking around a campfire, fun fun fun. Then I find out his missus is the owner of Livinghistory.ie. She sang that famous song around the blaze 'Is that a curtain you're are wearing or are you a re-enactor'. I might put it online for ye all to hear.
I have to say that the Knights on horseback were really magnificent and the jousting was the best ever. You really could not tell if they were hurt when they were lanced from their steeds. There were all the usual fair rides and, beagle and horse hunts, foot soldier battles, ww1 and ww1 battles ( on a small scale) the 'tans as stated before got theirs. I got a great kick when the Gardai patrolling took a great interest in the weapons used and displayed. An interested interest if you get my meaning. They were as fascinated with the diaplays as the public were. We were not sure how the Tan's, Auxies and British Soldiers re-enacting the famous ambush of Clonmult would go down in such a rebellious county but they really loved it, especially as the last tan was sent to his heavenly reward for betraying the IRA man who had pity on him. Long story.
Next out of the bag in Beltring and Cork Gaol. More information as it comes in.
Here are two videos taken on the Saturday.

The War and Peace show is on next week and there are quite a few lads from this country going so it should be good. I am not expecting as many stalls as last year so choices may be limited, I will only know when we get there. If you want anything priced or photographed let me before I go. I intend to go up in the helicopter at the show and video it from there and post it for ye all to see when I come back. Myself and another of the re-enacting fraternity are booked in in the camping section. Its 110 per man for the week and all the space you need. We have two tents and a car for storing stuff. The advantage of camping is that we have acess to the stalls two days before the public are allowed in and we do not need to travel to and from the show each day. The price also includes all camping facilities and access, as we are in the show compound.
The ferry for the car is about 135 each way. It will be a 6 hour drive when we hit Wales at 1.30am on Monday.
The beer will not be as good as we have it here, who cares about the weather, I have a pair of wellies. The crack is great, the people are friendly and the selection of items for sale is second to none.
If anyone is going to Beltring and wants to meet, I am always at the beer tent at 1pm wearing an Irish Army beret and cap badge. Easy to recognise, the handsome fellow, rather dashing, fisitificated.....you get the picture...s'me.
    Regards.

Myself and ‘Hawkeye’ Shanahan were booked on the evening Irish Ferries Rosslare sailing. Tried to get a bit of kip on the ship, it did not work, and drove off in Pembroke at 1,30am. Switched on the ould Satnav, ‘ould’ being the operative word. Do you know when a new road is built and you don’t update your satnav does not know anything about it? So off we headed on our merry way to 480 Kilometers away Beltring. With the moral support of Garry O’Brien and Paul Rea in a white van were were left on our own and they fecked off in to the wild blue yonder. Which was grand as the riveting conversations could slaughter the most battle hardened. We decided we would take a break at each of the service stations along the way and refresh ourselves with coffee and a bit of grub. For some reason the service stations along that route do not open at all during the night so we had nada. We came to a McDonalds with the lights on and pulled in for a bit of grub. The lights were on but no-one was at home so off we headed again. A service station with the lights on appeared in front of us and we leftied indicatered and pulled in. Like a scene from the twilight zone it was, lights on in the shop but nothing moving. I could look in to the shop like the door was open until I realised that the door was not open it was the space leaf where the cash machine used to be. Seemingly it had just been removed and we were first on the scene. Away we went again. It suddenly dawned on us and switched off the lights and noticed we were nearing London. We could tell this by the amount of people we were knocking down was increasing (joke). Coffeeless and dying for a hit an miss and eventually found a good Somerville station and refreshed ourselves. The coffee was good, the sarnies were cheap and I took a few bob from the cash dispenser with my credit card. It was the first time I ever did that and it impressed the heck outta me. Away with us to Beltring anyway until we came to the M25 where we followed the Satnav and the Satnav followed the roads as they were 3 years ago. Making a long story short we got to Hop Farm at 10, 30, yes 10, 30 I said, Garry!! No we did not stop for a kip on the way, I was just joking about that, ho freakin’ ho.

We booked in, and set up our tents, made the beds and Hawkeye got some shuteye. I was so full of coffee it gave me wings and I was away looking at the stalls.

For some reason Lee Enfield No 4 rifles have taken a leap in price starting at the £266 mark and the SMLE’s from 350. The rest of the weapons and items for sale you can get the prices yourselves by zooming in on the pictures of some of the merchandise. Another strange thing was that there were at least 3 Chassepot rifles and bayonets at different stalls. Very unusual. There was the same amount of dealers there as last year which surprised me as a few of them said they were not going to be there this year. Maybe they just wanted me to stay away?. The food vans were the same selection as usual and the best bit of grub was the Thai green curry. It look terrible but tastes delish. Water, food, ice-cream and drinks were overpriced. There was a small reduction of the Irish attendees but added to this were the British lads who supported Dungarvan who made a point of seeking out the lads and making themselves known.

The crowds were down in number perhaps it may take up today and tomorrow. The W&P staff were friendly and helpful. The Germans were cautiously friendly and if you were friendly back (which we always are) you might get a reduction in the price. The English were very friendly and a happy lot. If you wanted to chat they were most ameniable. The Belgian and French selling inert dug-ups were not interested in a haggle and the price you saw was the price you paid, even with my witty Irish charm they would not budge. Maybe I am losing it?

Now then among the items (‘among’ them being the operative word) was a lovely ww1 sword belt, Armourers kit and roll, a relic fuze, green t shirts at 5 for a tenner. Itw as only when I got home and opened them I realised they did not come with the poles, they were HUGE!!. All my nieces will have green nighty’s this Christmas. A ww2 Periscope and a more modern one in a steel container. Some shoulder titles, a Brodie helmet shell, a walking stick for the wife to beat me with, a shemah, a reconditioned tilly, 6 1905 five pouch leather bandoliers for Flying Column re-enactment, a trilby for same, a great pair of brown leather army bots for £3, you may see some of them for sale at the Dublin fairs for £30 soon. The Dublin members of the IMCC were there in force, Sean Curtis and all the Club were there although I did not get to find where they were, the place is so vast you could literally lose a battalion, wasthere not a film about that somewheres.

Now then, I did find a stall that sold dug ups, among them were the remains of boots (?) and webbing clips, and clips of drilled 303 ammo, and helmets, and bayonets (see the pictures), fuses, stokes mortars, dug bayonets of all types, rifle butt plates rested among shrapnel and others metal bits.

Among the zillions of trucks, jeeps, tanks, armoured cars, artillery, motorbikes were 4 aircraft. Two spitfires, a hurrican and a crashed German something. The thing is they were all models and looked magnificent. For £35 smackers you could sit in the cockpit and start the Spitfire, it looked great. Fair play to the lads who conceived it.

All in all a most enjoyable 3 day holiday in a place that makes my year.

We left at 3am on the Thursday morning and slept in my own beautiful bed from 10,30 that evening.

Time to start saving for next year.

    Regards.

The show in Cork Gaol will be a biggie, with a club based in Kildare also attending that has lots of the more modern (post 1970) vehicles and uniforms. WW2 and WW1 re-enactors and displays will be there as will lots of militaria dealers. No info on b@b's, sorry.

I made it to the War and Peace show thankfully this year and brought the wife , it has to end some time!
It's about the 7th time I've been there and felt the crowds have definitely died down as well as the amount of re-enactors.
German ww2 still commands a high price not a great deal of bargains there.
I did find ww1 German and ww2 British equipment could be got at a bargin for example 1917 dated German butcher bayonet I picked up for 30 euro, clean but minus scabbard. ww2 British artillery battle dress for £60.
I did see the guys selling the dug ups particullary the boots and felt rather sick about that as anyone collecting militaria will know its the one item of clothing a soldier will die wearing. My wife heard one of them joke "I had to put the metal detecor away my van was so full of metal"?
The other upsetting items for sale was a stand selling crashed aircraft parts in plastic tubs, mostly twisted aluminium airframe and a card describing the aircraft, when and where it crashed and mostly finished off with "crew killed" Maybe its just me but thats not something that would sit comfortably in my collection.
The last thing I did not see but a chap in the bar was complaining about a dealer selling skeletal remains! I was going to ask what era? out of moral issues but was afraid it would be taken as a sales inquiry.
I've spent the last week wondering wether to sell up or stick to a category.

We are heading down to Cork Gaol tommorrow afternoon to set up early i.e. befoe it gets dark to set up our tent etc. This show is the the newer version of the Cork Militaria Fair that used to be held in the Metropole Hotel but with a en-enactment and display side also. The Hotel was grand but ferrying gear up flights of stairs and getting parking while you do this, then drive the car round the corner to all-day park was very difficult. Then the same in reverse at the endof the day, does put potential traders off. It will be very much like the Curragh, Duncannon and Salute without any battlles taking place. Probably on a smaller scale though, we will just have to wait and see. Its open to the public from 10 a.m. on Saturday so if you are attending that early tippytoe around the place, goys have to sleep stuff off y'know!!
I am looking forward to it very much. Its a new venue for militaria and a new place for living history and to re-enact, the more the merrier. As usual I will take pictures and video and put it on the net for ye. So if you are interested in having a look at the images and video just pm me and I will send you a link.
I am sure the others who posted reports on shows and fairs etc and got no replies to their efforts will understand my new approach. This way I can see how many are interestted in what we do or are just lurkers.
    Regards.
    Tom.

I have posted reports of fairs which recieved zero response. Even posted photo galleries of re-enactment and military vehicle fairs which took a significant amount of my time with . . . .. . yep you guessed it .. . no resposne.

I would not be pm'ing anyone for a report of a fair - if it is posted I would read it eventually and more than likely reply to it if I have anything to add or if I have the time. For what it's worth I think you shouldn't take it personally that people do not reply directly to a militaria fair report.

It was a splendid venue for the show. The public loved it as did all the participants. I even got a few bob for petrol, now that never happened before, happy chappie. It was policed by the Gardai who were as fascinated as the public in the displays stalls, Gaol and re-enactments. Shows on the hour in the arena and the weather was perfect. Many thanks to Martin, Garry and Matt for a wonderful weekend. I can see that next years show there will be even better. There were lads there from every county, the north and the UK.
Anyway, I have started uploading pictures and then some videos through the day, enjoy.
    Regards.

I agree those militaria stalls look pretty interesting alright. Good selection of re-enactors as well.

Btw Did you see any nice Rising or War of Independence era militaria there ?

    Hello guys.
The setting is spectacular and the weathe was perfect. Anyway as you will see the videos are upoading to the same site so click on the link and follow on from there. The videos are slow to load thats why I took short ones. Now then Salute is on in the last weekend of this month and it is promising to be the biggest yet.
Now then, war of independance items at this fair. There were lots of copies of uniforms and insignia, it would not take very much of an expert to tell them from the originals. The quality is deliberately less than the original ( I am told by the vendor) so you can see they are fakes. There were some original black and tan medals but I dont know how much they were. I did see an original Oglaig Na h-Eireann belt with the brass buckle and the belt could hold bullets. At £1,200 I successfully fought the urge to buy it. For sale by a Northern Ireland dealer and brought home with him as well, unsold.
I am putting together a Flying column for re-enactment purposes and got lots of leather gear from it in Beltring over the years so over the next period of time you will see a lot of 'Tans' getting slaughtered. It was funny at the Carrigtwohill show, we said we would let the 'Tans' win but they said no, if we did not kill them the crowd certainly would!!
Getting back to War of Independance stuff, if the repro stuff is not what you want Whites auction is the place for you m'lad as there is very little of it about and whats about is darned expensive.
I was also glad to see sellers from the Teachers club fair. They compained that they did not get much response from sellers and the public for their fairs. I mentioned the fact that secrer fairs were rarely successful and he should take a stall at the big shows like Duncannon, Salute, The Curragh and now Cork Gaol in future and everyone will be a winner. It seems that it just might happen...
    Regards.
Tom....still uploading video of the show for ye.
