    Piece of garbage.

Yep, much better stuff out there for the money. I'd wager even at half-price theres better tone/money value out there.

the AVTs were never great, and were pretty much rendered redundant when the cheap modellers came out.

    Pass on it.

Dirt.......they are Marshall MG's with a few valves........
You won't get a top quality all valve amp for a few hundred Euro.

You are looking at €1000....give or take a couple of hundred....

I am sure someone will disagree with me......it usually happens here.

Who said he was after a top quality all valve amp?

Yep, they are truly terrible amps.

Anyway, if you tell us what you're after, we can recommend something better.

It's still available on ebay. And Metroamp make great clones of it. ;)

I don't want to exaggerate here, but I'd go so far as to suggest that it's the most dreadful amplifier of any kind ever created in the history of the universe. If I owned one, I'd pay you €339 to take it away.

Nah, the MG is far worse.

It's like comparing dog faeces and cat faeces.

Is anyone qoing to suggest an alternative in that price range?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,132 ✭✭✭novarock

little bit more cash, but a valveking is 550 euro on thomann, definitely more bang for your buck, or you could check through the buy and sell (www.buyandsell.ie) i got a JCM 900 combo for €550 through it.

The other thing is do you have the need for an amp that big?

    You make a good point.

Personally, I wouldn't touch a valve amp in that price range, unless it's single ended. Something digital modelling definitely - Line 6, Vox, or Roland, probably.

You mean like the ad50vt he has?

Yes. If that one is not to his taste, there are plenty of others.

I'm sure there are. I'm so long off the scene I have no idea which ones though. One or two of the vids on the web with Marshall AVT sounded ok, but I've never tried one myself.

Tbh, a line6 spider does a far more convincing Marshall sound than an AVT.

Everything I read on the web contradicts the next thing. Some people say line 6 are great, other they are terrible. Some say the Marshalls AVTs are bad, then others say you can get a good Marshall sound from them with some tweaking. Theres also mixed reports about the reliability of each brand too. Ditto the other brands.

I'm thinking now it largely depends on the person using the gear and if everything comes together they love their gear. If someone has a mismatch then they hate it. Also lots of people seem to want that nu-metal "wasp in jar" sound and are happy with very artificial and over processed distorsion.

I think your probably better going with a amp with a clean channel and tone you like, and buy a decent pedal, for distorsion and/or effects.
