the nipple broke off so can't relase air :(

was told to drill a hole and use a self tapper to seal it.

are there any other options ?

It's a vent, not a valve. If it is at the back of the rad facing the wall, it is probably a Veha rad and I am afraid that there are not many options. If it is at the end of the rad, then it is likely that the whole fitting can be screwed off and a new one fitted. If you use the crude "drill a hole and screw in a self tapper, then you may have leaks and problems in the future, when trying to bleed etc.
If you can get the rad drilled and tapped, then you can get a vent fitting which will screw in permanently.
    Jim.

the vent is indeed at the back right where you can't get at it :(
self tapper would be a one off solution as I'd never expect it to be fully sealed.

Are you turning the valve the right way. It is the opposite way to the way you might think because you are working with the back rather than the front of the rad.

It is a tricky one as James M said

    It could be possible
to remove the rad, drill out the broken vent and re tap the hole and fit a new vent.
remove rad and fit a new rad.
use a Tek screw (a self tapping roof screw with rubber washer to seal) have seen these used as a short term fix.

    Good luck

did the whole drilling and selftapping thing to a rad befor and it was nearly a disaster. i put a bit of silicone on the threads and used the self tappers with the rubber washer like flocker mentioned. personally ied get a new rad or loosen the inlet and outlet valves at the bottom and let the rad fall forward onto some blocks to exspose the back of the rad. drill a small hole in the vent cap and force in a flat head screw driver to reomve it or for short term plug the hole with a self tapper and it wont be seen when you put the rad back up.

the rad won't swing so it's probably going to be replaced someday soon

    thanks all.
