Thank gawd, sorry Australia but really you'll never deserve it. ;)

Fifa has dropped its policy of rotating the World Cup between continents, according to the world governing body's vice-president Chung Mong-Joon.

The decision opens the way for England to bid to stage the tournament in 2018.

The Football Association has already expressed an interest in bidding to host the event, and Prime Minister Gordon Brown has backed the idea.

But a number of other strong contenders are expected, including China, Russia, Australia and the USA or Mexico.

Chung said all national associations could apply to host future tournaments, except those that belonged to confederations that hosted the two preceding editions.

For 2018, that would rule out bids from Africa or South America, with South Africa hosting the tournament in 2010 and Brazil poised to be confirmed as 2014 hosts this week.

The decision is expected to be confirmed at a news conference later on Monday.

    More to follow.

    Mike.

I think if South Africa can get a finals then the Aussies certainly deserve one. World cup final the the MCG would be something else.

Big time. Group games in the Telstra would be nice and a few over this side in Subiaco. Only problem for me is I hate oval stadiums. Fans are too far away from the pitch. It's the same with the Super 14 rugby when I went to that. Kind of ruins the experience.

They should keep a rotation but weight it in favour the decent continents :) Something like, Europe, Americas, Europe, Asia, Europe and Africa ;)

You don't need to rotate something that is every 4 years, just go on the strengths of the bids at the time. At most, the cup shouldn't be on the same continent twice in a row, but thats about it.

    Shock news :)
Brazil has been named as the host nation for the 2014 football World Cup.

The South American country was the only one bidding to host the tournament which was due to be staged on the continent under Fifa's rotation system.
