Are there protectors for electrics and broadband modems that are resettable?
IE, you don't have to buy a new one every time it gets zapped just replace a fuse or trip switch?

Yes, in a way, but it's two pronged.
Most of these devices contain a coil of wire which chokes the incoming surge and limits its damage potential. They then blow apart when the incoming surge is beyond the capability of the device specification. So, you may be experiencing a lot of smaller surges which you are unaware of, but you're seeing the protection device getting damaged from the higher surges.

A UPS on the other hand has better protection but they are a lot more expensive...
Low end protection, like you have, uses the fact that you can sacrifice the loss of a few cheaper components to protect the more expensive equipment attached. Better protection = bigger price.
