    Hi guys and gals!

    I have an eos400d.

I shoot in raw+jpeg so i have both. However when I download from camera with windows or paintshop downloader, it only downloads files as jpegs, for some reason it wont download the raw files, it just takes them as jpegs and I end up with 2 copies of each photo I have taken but both are jpegs instead of 1 jpeg and 1 raw.

    Anyone else have this problem?

    Anyway around it?

I have the canon software on my desktop only which doesnt have this problem however lost the disk and cant seem to get a download for it from the canon site so I can put it on laptop, only updater software which requires you to have some canon software already on your computer.

Download Picasa, it will import RAW and JPEG from camera.

Some software won't see/download raw files.

I use Corel Photo Album (came with Paint shop Pro X) and find it brilliant for downloading all my photos and organising them in to folders.

    Hmm.

My past experience is that Adobe Photoshop Elements doesn't find the CR2 files for me. I use Windows Vista downloader to get them but it is possible that the XP downloader does not down them.

The Canon software should. Having twice tried to use Picasa, I have decided that it's a useless pile of tripe of software so I don't tend to recommend it. I realise that I am alone in this, however.

PaulW, just on the subject of PSP, how do you find it feature wise? I was glancing at it today and wondering about it. Does it have a curves tool and layers?

I've had PSP since version 6, and bought the minor upgrades. I've never done much processing with it though, I do the majority of my work in Photoshop. But, I do find the Photo Album brilliant for downloading and organising my photos.

Canon software all the way... just dumps everything into folders by date. Perfect.
Windows XP has always downloaded the raw files for me in the past though, so it's strange that it isn't working... note it won't display the thumbnails in the "import pictures wizard".. but it'll definitely still work.

    Thanks guys

BTW when you have them downloaded, should I edit the raw files with the canon digital photo professional and then convert and do processing in my 3rd party software (paintshop pro) or is it best do do it all in paintshop?

    Thanks!

Paintshop pro should be able to do everything for you including convert the RAW files, which version do you have?

    Have the latest, version X2

Just wondering however, is it best to set things like exposure with the canon software, save as the raw and then further edit curves/levels etc in paintshop? Or should I just do everything in paintshop.

Thanks! Just tryin to figure out a workflow routine as I am new to all this! Also, when I am done editing and want to print, whats the best way to go about printing say a 5x7 print as obviosuly the raw file cant be printed and anyway at 10mp it will be too large. So do you convert to jpeg first and then resize or what. And obviosuly convert to jpeg without compression I assume to maintain quality?

If anyone has any links to tutorials on this basic stuff on the net that would be great and I will stop annoying you lot here!

    Cheers!

Firstly, you're not annoying anyone. We're always willing to help, and be prepared for the day when we ask for your help. :D

Workflow is a personal thing. Ask 10 people here how they process files, and you'll get 10+ answers.

I have done everything in PSP before. Open the file, edit and then print. When you go to print, you have to tell it to "fit to page". I can't remember where it is, but you can print any size file (large or small) and make it fit to the paper size you're using. Ok, I'll admit that you may waste a few pages before you fine tune what you need to do, but in the end you will get used to it.

For me, I use photoshop. But, my mom uses PSP. She doesn't do any editing, but uses it to organise and print her photos. If she can manage it, then I'm sure you can. She prints anything from 10x15cm to A4.

PSP is powerful enough to allow you to do just about everything you need.

When you develop the RAW file at first you should be concentrating on getting the basics right, colour balance, exposure, black point, highlight recovery and saturation. These are the areas where you can really exploit the extra information saved over and above jpeg. Then you can do any other editing you need in a normal editor.

This video will give you an idea of a develop workflow using RAW. Its based on Lightroom but the principles apply to all software.
