"Normal" cars you wanted when you were a kid

OK.......So what car did it for you when you were a kid?

Which car did the bloke down the street own that made you say "I'm gonna have one of them when I am old enough to drive"?

No supercars please..........we can all dream about owning a Ferrari or Lambo. This is all about cars you would see everyday where you lived.

I shall start things off with this little gem......

    Over to you............

A Bloke in my street had a TR7, I thought it was the coolest thing on the planet. Even now when I see one I think back to more innocent times, didnt realise they were such bad cars, but it was the 70s.

Showing my age here, but when I was a nipper, I always fancied either a Triumph Dolomite Sprint or (don't laugh) a Rover 3.5 litre Coupe (the P5B version). Always liked the Jensen Interceptor/FF as well, but I guess that'd fit into the supercar category (in those days, anyway!).

Mr Grey here wanted to own a Volvo, preferably an estate. :o

And I did, too, eventually. :)

There are a few, I'm an 80s kid so it was the 90s before I started noticing these things:

    Renault 25
    Volvo 960
Opel Rekord/Senator (Both my grandads had them)
    Mitsubishi Signum.

    I had a thing for big cars...still do. I'm hoping for a 97-98 A6 in the new year:D:D

The dad of a friend of mine was repairing cars from their home, so they always had a number of cars sitting about. One of those I immediately fell in love with. It was a late70s or early 80s Ford Granada. I can remember sitting in front of the steering wheel. I just knew there and then that I had to get a Granada, so as soon as I had the money I bought a 1979 Ford Granada 2.3L. Amazing car! My head still turns every time I see a Granada of that shape.

When I was young I was into exotica. Now I consider Ferraris, Lambos, Astons etc a bit juvenile.:D

As for 'normal' cars - Saab 9000, Merc W124, Peugeot 405.
To my shame i really liked the Isuzu Gemini for a while

Always dreamed of a DeLorean as well, still do.
    550_delorean_in_dublin_01.jpg
SuperMirafiori would have been on my list as well, as with Saab 900 turbo (would have to be black with black leather interior :) ), Lancia Delta Integrale of course too, and a Capri Brooklands, Audi Quattro was another one also.

Here's a few more on my list:

    Renault Alpine GTA
    550_lancia_beta_montecarlo_rear_01.jpg
Lancia Beta Montecarlo (notice the similarity to the Delorean!), although I also very much admired the Lancia Thema.
    550_lancia_thema.jpg
Opel Monza, Manta too of course. Would also like the 1973–1979 Kadett (Vauxhall Chevette).
    550_opel_monza.jpg
    Alfa Romeo Alfasud

    Ford Sierra XR4x4

I'm sure I will think of more later

I've always loved BMW. I've loved a 6 pot BMW ever since I heard the noise of one. I attribute 6 pot BMWs to my subsequent love of cars.

I have a real affection for the E34 and E39. 520i, because its not the fastest car ever in the world so you have to rev it more and that means hearing more of that glorious straight 6:D!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,819 ✭✭✭✭peasant

Ha ... I was lucky there.

Got the Saab thing out of my system while I still could ...had both a 900 turbo and a 9000 before I got married and could still do what I wanted :D

The one from my childhood days that is now somewhat beyond reach (in driveable condition anyway) is this:

    X19.jpg

    FTW!

Also, Fuego yes, Integrale definitely, Capri 2.8i, Scirocco.

For some strange reason, when I was really old enough to know better, I was quite fond of the look of the Nissan Bluebird hatchback.

I just wanted a car that went all the time, my Dad had a Morris Minor that we seemed to be forever pushing because there was so many puddles in the roads on those days, the plugs were always getting wet and the car would stop in the middle of the road so he had to get out and try to dry out the plugs, or someone, hopefully would come along and give him a tow or we'd have to push it, pushing didn't always work though. My husband wants one now, I told him he'll be in it on his own, I'd have to go on Valium to get into one :p.

(I'm probably the oldest person here seeing as I remember moggy minors) :D

I loved the De Lorean though!

    Datsun Sunny Coupé
    Fiat 128
    Fiat 'Bambino'
    Fiat Ritmo
    Ford Capri
    Ford Sierra Cosworth
    Citroen 2CV
    Renault 5

These days from that lot the Cosworth and Capri still have the 'cool' factor but the Bambino and 2CV definitely have a 'classic' feel.

    Mine in no particular order:

Ford Cortina GXL (the coke bottle shape)
205 gti (the 1.9l one that invariably was parked up a tree)
    Sierra XR4i
Mercedes w123 (very close to actually buying one of these soon :))
    Opel Manta
Mazda 626 Coupe (anyone remember these?)
    Citroen DS

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,616 ✭✭✭TomMc

I'll admit the Fuego was also on my wanted list.:o

Surprise, surprise, this Renault was quite a hit with the ladies too, if you know what I mean.;) The 80's were simpler times !

Probably my 2 favourite cars. While you do see a good few 2CVs on the road, it's been a long time since I've seen an R4. Apparently the R4s weren't the best cars to start off with, so no surprise that they can't be found anymore.

My uncle used to drive a Renault 4, as did the postman (in van form of course!) not quite the same as a 4cv, but brings back memories! A lot of P&T vans were Renaults too.
Can never say I dreamt of owning one though!
