Hi, my daughter's Toshiba A100 laptop screen is broken, she got a quote for €800 for it to be replaced, labour extra, is that the general price for a screen replacement?

You could buy a new laptop for that much. What exactly is wrong with the screen? Is the laptop still in warranty?

Thats a rediculous price......you'd buy a new laptop for that price

Sometimes there are screens on ebay for very cheap......

Thank you Pacifico, I'll tell her to look for another few quotes.

I haven't seen it myself AlmightyCushion, she just told me about it the other day on the phone, she says that there's a crack down the middle of it, that she can read one half of the screen a bit but not the other half. It's not still in warranty more's the pity.

Yeah I know you can get one cheaper than that, this one cost €1250 so it would be a shame to discard it if we can't get the screen fixed, €800 is a lot to pay though, then the labour of course is costly also.

Hi, I have a problem with my laptop a Toshiba Satellite Pro L20, when I switch it on now I see white across the screen with a wave across the top of screen and thin coloured lines running vertically and horizontally.

How this happened was I left the laptop charging while at work with the screen 'open' so that a scan for viruses could take place and when I got back what I have just mentioned was after happening.

I can see no other reason other than the laptop having overheated. I sent it to a repair centre, their engineer claimed that there was a crack on the screen which was caused by physical damage, ie it was dropped or a pen was between the screen and keypad.

I know that I did not drop the laptop.
I still have a warranty that runs to May09 but apparently warranty does not cover such a repair. The laptop is more than 18 months old and I have been quoted €452 to repair the screen.

I think that is too much to spend considering that a basic brand new laptop would cost in around €500.

Would it be useful to anyone for spares, it works fine when put through an external monitor?

I think they quoted you that much to price themselves out of it really. It sounds like they don't want to do the job. Screen replacements can be a nightmare and, generally are not worth it unless the machine is covered by warranty or is a high spec one that is out of warranty.
I would guess that *if* a replacement screen was to be found (probably on ebay) that it would cost you roughly €200+ and then the labour on top of that would be roughly €150-200 so ball park €400ish.
As stated above when totalled up its not economically viable to replace the screen with it being almost as pricey as a new laptop.

For toshiba repairs check with http://www.bms.ie
    http://www.bms.ie/toshiba2.htm A200 for €699

I've said it many times before, the screen is the most expensive part it's a piece of glass, and everyone knows how fragile glass is , and if the laptop is more than a year or two old then it's worth getting the cost of replacing the screen. DIY is a lot cheaper if you can source the screen, but not a simple job.

Another option is to buy an external monitor and use it as a desktop.

Yes i think they (BSS) have priced themselves out of the market with regards to screen replacement of LCD SCREEN FOR Satellite Pro L20 Toshiba Laptop, I have asked for to get it back, and im being charged £15 sterling as it is not covered by warranty as it 'is physically damaged' apparently.

There is no obvious sign of a crack on the screen or on the casing.

I have since requested that it be delivered to my local computer agent for further asessment .
I have in the mean time ordered a new acer laptop, so hopefully that shall keep me going for the next while!

    TBH that is normal,
    accidental damage cover is extra

leaving a pen or something on the keyboard and then closing the lid is very common and would show no obvious cracks or scratches other than on the glass itself

BTW one of the past causes of laptop damage were reps leaving the laptop on the roof of the car and driving off  , not as common as it used to be
