Leopard's price on the apple.com/ie store is €129. On apple.com store it is 129 USD. Can someone explain why we are paying €30 more for the same software?

If I ask a friend to buy a US copy and post it here, will there be a huge difference?

because it's been like that ever since apple exsisted.

also the US price is exlcuding tax as the US store cannot add sales tax until you enter your details as it's governed by state and not by country.

i'm pretty sure this has been covered in the mad mega leopard thread up at the top of the forum

When will people learn that Ireland is a different country to everywhere else. with different laws, different costs, different tax, different economy, different currency, different consumer spending power etc etc etc..
We pay more for a lot of products than our nearest economic neighbour the UK because of these reasons. Especially costs and consumer buying power. We are far richer as a people than your average Brit. As such we can afford to pay more.
As for the US, Cremo put it perfectly... some states do not even have sales tax :D you can not compare our economies because they are too different. You are better off comparing Europe to the US.

See the Are we being ripped off thread.

Any kind of electronics or software are cheaper in the States and always have been, so this doesn't bother me much. It becomes more of an issue with the hardware IMO. Yes, that's cheaper in the States too, but the difference in Apple's pricing vs other companies' is a bit excessive I think. See my post in the above thread for an example (although admittedly that was a somewhat random comparison, I'd have to look into it more to get conclusive proof).

Anyway, to answer your other question, the US version of Leopard and the Irish version are exactly the same. If your friend posts it here you'll have to pay postage costs (unless of course the friend is very nice), and customs duty if it's sent by secure post (Fed Ex etc.) You'll also have to wait for it to be delivered, obviously. For the sake of less than €30 I'd just buy it here. Of course, if your friend just sticks the disc into a plain envelope and sends it by regular post you'll probably make a half-decent saving, but do you really want to risk it getting lost or damaged in the post?

Heiniger AG in Niederbipp (Berne) has Leopard for €94,53.

Switzerland is a lot richer than Ireland in real world economic measures, and has always had some of the highest property prices and salary levels in the world.

    Ripoff Ireland.

Thanks for bringing a sound analysis to bear on this one Probe. Irrespective of sales taxes or anything else spoken of here, the Euro price is the same for all Euro countries within the EU. If you are living in Italy, it is still that much more expensive than the Euro price. That was the entire point of the Euro.

It is not as if I did not realise that the US is a different economy with different price structures. Being patronised like this (Saruman) is why I don't come back to boards that much. Thanks for the help all the same.

Actually this is not the case unless you mean something other than consumer spending power.
Only Luxembourg is richer, and thats a microstate so cant be compared in the same way.
    For instance: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_(PPP)_per_capita
On both lists, Ireland is well ahead of Switzerland.

I know this is off topic but the fact remains while in some areas we might be ripped off compared to other countries (VRT for instance) the Rip off republic in my opinion is a myth.

Guys this is more of a topic for Consumer Affairs, as Apple is not the only company to be "ripping people off". Make this discussion just about Apple or I shall move it, either way, next few posts I reckon its getting moved anyway!

Do we really need to have a thread about this subject every other week?

"OMG the prices in America are the same in Europe!!!!"
