Only played Rathcore from that list Graemo, but I think it's a lovely course... very different, few holes where u can't take driver... would well recommend a trip round it...

You being a Scotsman, it'll mean nothin to you, but the owner is former Meath dirty-b*stard fullback of yesteryear, Mick Lyons...

Be sure to shake your fist and shout obscenities if you see the hoor knockin about the place!

Graeme, i've played Turvey during the summer. From what I could remember the holes 14, 15, 16, 17 were under development. Realignment of the fairways, adding some rolling hills and mounds etc. It was difficult to play those holes. Apart from that the front 9 was good, tight, some very nice holes, but I wouldnt go back until the development work is complete. Worth a visit then.

Another vote for Rathcore here. Great variety of holes and very well maintained. Very friendly staff also, noticably so, which can't be said of many courses I've visited (Navan is the only other one that comes to mind where we felt welcomed rather than just welcome). Midweek earlybird rate of €20 before 10am can't be beat. Ridiculously cheap for a quality course, no wonder they're struggling for members!

Played Kilcock quite a few years ago and even with my fledgling knowledge of golf found it to be pretty dull. Only notable holes were a par 3 and a par 4 where the tee boxes were beside each other so you played both tee shots, accross a deep valley, then finished the par 3 and went straight up the fairway to find your par 4 ball. Other than that it was fairly featureless up and down stuff. T'was 10 years or more ago though. Maybe someone can give a more up to date review.

First of all, €20 before 10.0am in Rathcore?? Did not know that - thanks for the tip-off Milltown...

Also, never heard of anything like that in Kilcock with the two tee shots?! That's weirdly cool! But is it legal?? Could an Open be played there like?

Rathcore is a really nice course, and well worth a vist.

Avoid Turvey like the plague, it's a s**t hole.

im a member in county meath graeme.
its pretty short with a lot of tight-ish, par 4s. you could leave the driver in the bag 75% of the time (i do) and play rescues & 3 woods. a few doglegs where you just cant take the driver either way.
it has only 3 par 3s and theyre all 170 yds +, par73. four par 5s all well reachable in two with a decent tee shot.
greens arent great at the moment...usual story, they dont cut them down enough imho. rough is well cut down.
its enjoyable enough but reasonably bland. the last 3 holes being by far the best. i think if you can drive the ball straight youll score.

south meath is meant to be short & very bland. not that well maintained afik, ive never played it even though its about 500 yards from county meath.

as others have mentioned rathcore is excellent.

Would agree with good reviews of Rathcore. Deserved more recognition than it got the last few years.
Played Kilcock last summer after the re-design of 9 holes, and this summer all 18 should be in play. Some nice refinements and fantastic new greens. Definitely worth a look.

That's a bit harsh on Turvey, f22. It's not that bad. It's Donabate I'd steer clear of.

No one has mentioned Moor Park - I wonder why!!

I think, Graeme, you have your recommendations for Rathcore. It's certainly streaks ahead of the other courses mentioned. Turvey would be my second choice.

Sorry, Graeme, I missed the original posting date. So which ones have you played?

Just saw an ad for Rathcore today. Membership is €4000 but can be spread over a few years (think it is 6 but not 100%) or they are doing a 5 day membership for €600 for a year and it did say something about a reduced rate on this till the end of the year. That could be great value for someone looking to get a handicap.

Very good value for a very good course!

Went out (county meath) early this morning and got in bone dry, thank god!

Nice course, I wasn't that straight of the tee and got myself into trouble on a few occasions, but nothing too bad. It is a tight course alright, on the back 9, there’s a couple of holes, short par 4’s, that the driver is not needed. Par 3's are long as you said. The last three holes are nice, 17 which is index 1 is not that difficult just long. The 18th a lovely par five I had a decent drive, took a five iron up the hill to what I though was going to be a 9 iron to the green, it actually turned out to be another 5 iron to 10 feet to the hole, nice par to finish!

    No good.

76 nett off 16, never played the course before…. but that’s no excuse!

An 8 on the fourth which I over hit my 2nd shot to the green than again over hit my 2nd ball (the pin was at the back and there’s no room at the back of the green) Got back on track than double bogeyed 15, 16 and 17, all tee shots landing beside trees completely killed things! but a very enjoyable round.

One little point I will make that there's no yardage sticks on the course (There is those disks in the ground, there a little hard to see) and the whole metres thing confused me a little, nothing major!

as you say, there are distance markers in the ground....i dont think theyre that hard to see?!. maybe the confusion is that theyre in metres to the front. also, most holes have small evergreens at both sides of the fairway at 150yds to the front.

the fourth is notorious. for some reason it plays about 10 yards less than its distance - i always play a club less than the distance to the pin, even though the distance markers are right.

I wouldnt think you would have the bottle to say it to his face.
You were probably on hill 16 shouting at him from a good distance.
