I'm 1st year CSLL (French), so as such I can only offer you 3 weeks experience!

    1) The modules for 1st year CS ar: Mathematics, Introduction to Programming, Introduction to Computing, Digital Logic, Electrotecnology/Telecommunications, Computers and Society and Programming Project. CSLL only does Maths and Intro to Prog. I dunno, but we might do the Programming project aswell.

    2) Some of the CS lads have said that the other aspects are interesting, but I couldn't really comment on that.

    3) So far, I would recommend the course. If you are particularly fond of Gaeilge, Deutsch or Francais, go for it. For French, the only aspect of the TSM course that we do not take is the texts, i.e. no literature (this week's assignment, I believe, was 1500 words on 4 pages of J.-P. Sartre's "Huis Clos" :P)

As far as I can see, they should really call CSLL "Programming, Linguistics and a Language".

I hear you guys only have like 16 hours a week or something. Is that true? And if so, why are you only doing 2 modules from CS? We have 24 hours a week....

From what I can see, CSLL is really a totally different course to CS. I'd personally think you'd be missing out not doing Intro to Computing, Electrotech/Telecomms, Digital Logic and Computers and Society, but that's my opinion and I'm much more interested in learning about scientific things than languages.

If you're really interested in languages and linguistics and have a bit of interest in programming, then do CSLL. If you're really into computers but would like to learn a language also then do CS and an evening language module.

Yeah, it's 16 a week, plus the 2 hour Friday seminars (whenever they start!). I think we do Intro to Computing, but as a one class entity, at least that's it's official module title. It's fair to say, though, that it should be called "Programming, Linguistics and a Language".

Personally, the only other module I'd be interested in is Computers and Society, but Linguistics for me is fun and really interesting...

So sit in on the lecture. AFAIK you guys just go home at 4 on a Tuesday, so it's not like you've anything better to do, and it is pretty interesting.

An oxymoron if ever I heard one ;)

    Might be an idea...
Is that the only lecture you have in it?

You do know what linguistics actually entails right?

Yes, but I think it was clear from the context of my post what I meant without the need to be pedantic.

Yep, there are evening courses, and various levels for people with varying levels of the language.

To be honest it just came across as ignorance to me.

JF CSLL people have three CS (including maths) courses, 3 linguistics courses and the language. That's the same amount of "science" as JF in the Computer Science course. And a language on top of that.

Maybe if you said you didn't want to divide yourself over two disciplines or said you didn't want to do a language on top of some science course. But to me it just looked like you were denigrating linguistics as a "lesser" science. Or worse, misinterpreting it as just another word for learning a language.

It looks like to me that you're just trying to stir shít and imply I'm some sort of elitist for no reason.

The word "scientific" would be more commonly associated with things like how a computer works, physics(electrotech) and digital logic than linguistics. Yes it was a technically incorrect statement and Linguistics is a very valid and important branch of science but ffs, you knew what I meant.
