What bass?

Want to buy a new bass to replace my stingray 5 which just doesn't seem to suit my style.
I'm thinking along the lines of a Warwick Corvette std or Cort Artisan A5. Also considering washburn, yamaha, G&L.
I really want to actually hold and play these before I commit, ideally somewhere I can try 4 or 5 possibilities but none of the shops in Dublin stock them & in reality I'll probably be buying online or oversees to get best price.
May even fly over to UK for a day to buy.
Are there any shops in the North worth checking if they have stock? Or any recommended stores in UK? I think it's the best option if I want to really try them all out.

What is it about the Stingray that you don't like?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 710 ✭✭✭fuse

Hmm I find it hard to explain, but I'm just not feeling it!
I pick up basses worth half its value & instantly warm to them!
I can't get the same volume out of it when slapping/popping especially the higher end.
Can't seem to get the bite I want from it. Have tried various string types & guages.
I think the strings are a little close together for my liking.
I don't think we're ment to be together...

I know "Musician Inc" in Drury St stock G&L's. Also there is a shop that specialises in Yamaha guitars a few doors past the "Long Hall " pub (going towards Camden St.).

Little off topic, but got any pics of your Stingray?

If you don't like the string spacing on the Stingray then forget G&L, their 5's are only 16.5mm, very narrow indeed. Have you considered an Ibanez BTB? There was a 5 string Fender Marcus Miller sig model in Musicmaker, give that a shot if it's still there. It'll have wider spacing and if you can't get a good slap tone out of that then the bass ain't the problem, that thing was made for slap :p

I've always disregarded the Marcus Miller bass because of the chrome pickup cover! I haven't played one, but it looks like it's in the wrong place for the way I play. I've just read you can take it off tho so maybe it's back in the running. Beautiful guitar otherwise.

I played the G&L in musician, the body is big & clumsy, and yes string spacing was a little tight. I find them ugly to look at too, which sadly is a factor!

Played an ibanez recently & enjoyed it alright, not sure if it was BTB, looks familiar tho. Would defo consider one also.

What I need is a saturday in a bass superstore!

You should try out the New MM with dual Humbukers. Miles ahead of the standard single bucks. I've a new Stingray5 & Bongo with the dual's. The tone is more shapable than my other MM.

The G+L are great. Even there Tribute model is a good buy. I can not comment on Warwick, but was never a fan of anyone except the Infinity model. Fender 5 strings are hit and miss. The Marcus Miller 5 in MM is not set up at all correct from last I seen it. Shame....

If i was going to fly any where ot be to Germany....MusicStore and Thomann have most of the brands you mentioned and there more than willing to arrange a visit in advance.

The cover on the Marcus Miller is removable. You can just screw it off, two small screws hold it on. The covers aren't to everyones tastes, some like 'em, some don't but don't let it put you off a bass because of them.

You should have a look at some more Ibanez 5'ers. They make them with wider necks than some other manufacturers.

What about an Ibanez Roadgear? The body shape doesn't differ too much from your MM, you've still got a Musicman style pickup plus the addition of an extra pickup and 19mm string spacing!

    €799 on Thomann! :)

Found Musicman string spacing to be painfully narrow before. Instrumental stock Warwick, and are pretty cool about trying them as well, so they're worth a look-in.

well I would agree that the 5 String MM string spacing is tight.

Something tells me Doctor J wants a MM??

Lpayed an Ibanez mid price bass years ago....very nice. I'd say you can get some great basses off them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 710 ✭✭✭fuse

Stingray isn't for sale yet, gotta find me a new one first, which could take a while!

Nah, don't like narrow spacing and I've got a surplus of 5ers at the moment.

To the OP, have a look at a Lakland 55-02 if you can, it might be what you're looking for, wide spacing, hugely flexible amount of tones and very suitable for slapping, plus it's a 35" scale so the B is very defined. Great bass for the money.

O i really like the sound i get off it but man im telling you music man is the bass for me, i cant describe why its just when i play one i get a tingling sensation down the back o my neck.

Either that or i wouldnt mind a 6 string bass. John myung model FTW. I wont turn this into a buy and sell cause fey already warned me once so i cant be talking bout how much i would sell it for.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,150 ✭✭✭Passenger

Aye, his signature machine is sweet looking, haven't played it, tho one would imagine it's top drawer. I'm a big fan of Warwick. Just a gorgeous bass to play.

John Myung would disagree. He's playing EBMM Bongo 6 strings now, has done since the recording of the last album.

Ahhh yes the Bongo 6, the cause of G.A.S. right now on many bass forums!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

GAS? Nah, not here, thank ****. It's unusual for me not to GAS over any piece of **** bass but that thing is just ****in wrong in my eyes. Narrow spacing and it looks like a toilet seat. It's the Kubicki of the 21st century, a great bass electronically but just wrong visually.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,817 ✭✭✭✭Dord

    Yeah not everyone likes them.

Oh btw Fuse, I saw a piece in Bass Guitar Mag UK saying that Warwick are offering an extra wide spacing as an option on 5 and 6 string Thumb basses, its called the Thumb Broadneck. The spacing is 20mm. :)

I can not believe the released the Bongo6 now. I was only over in the bloody states in sept. Got me a 4 string Bongo, but it would have been nice to try out the 6. According the the UK dustribution they've only shipped 4/5 to Ireland for special orders. Not one shop I could find in Ireland with one. Yes I can see the toilet seat thing about it but you have to play/hear it. Its tops :-)

    Thats a tasty looking Warwick.

The Bongo 6 is due for release at winter NAMM. Probably won't see any of them in the shops here though :( I'd love to try one out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

The Bongo is utterly fugly. Made it hard to look at Dream Theater onstage in France. :( I haven't found Warwick's string-spacing on their fives to be too tight, and I have rather meaty digits, so wouldn't worry about that to be honest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,658 ✭✭✭Patricide

he can disagree all he wants but the fact is you cant beat the price to tone ratio on the yamaha. 6 strings, nice tone, nice looks. Under a grand. Perfecto imo.

To my eyes it does n't look physically possible (and still get a clear tone) to finger the higher frets on the bass string of those guitars unless you've got hands like "King Kong". :p

So Fuse any further with the bass choice???

Just back from Cork, was playin with a dixie/swing jazz band, and the musicman was great for it! That's where it's at it's best.
But usually I'd be using heavier fingerstyle plucking with more dynamics, where it's not as good.

Cheers for the suggestions! I think the broad neck might be a little extreme, i'm quite happy with a normal width neck, it's just the mm is smaller.

The lakland looks ideal, will see if I can find one, although it seems influenced by the musicman? Maybe a little to similar, would like to try something different.

    I'm liking the look of
    Warwick Corvette FNA Jazzman
    http://www.thomann.de/ie/warwick_corvette_fna_jazzman_5_nt.htm
    or
    Cort Artisan a5

    What think yee?

It can do the Stingray thing, but it's far from a one trick pony. The pre is hugely powerful, bass-mid-treble cut and boost and you can change the mid frequency. Add a fat J pickup into the mix too, there aren't many tones you can't get with them. Lakland have samples of the tone http://www.lakland.com/multimedia/ac_5502.htm and it's 19mm spacing.

As for Bacchus, **** sake chaps, as if ye need to question how good they feel or sound. They are Parmaggiano Reggiano in a world of easi-singles :D

Fuse, If you haven't chosen a bass yet. If you're ever in London, go to Denmark Street. It's a road of music shops, must be about 6/7 of them, including "The Bass Guitar Shop" where I got my bass on Wednesday.

It's off Charring Cross Road, just ask people for the way to Denmark Street. It's awesome.
