Using Tri-Grip plates as dumbbells

I got 2 20kg plates from www.irish-lifting.com -good finish/paint, and great price & delivery (poor courier was about 60, thought it was slates!).

Tri grip plates are like this

What I like about them is that they are flush with the side of your body when holding them. If you try doing squats and some other exercises with dumbells the plates can get in the way of your limbs/body. The stronger you get the bigger the plates you need. 5kg plates are about the limit you can use. When using 10kg plates even bicep curls are difficult as they are so large.

My plan is to get a circular plate and attach a 1" diamter plate to it perpendicularly. This can have a 10kg plate slotted on, then the trigrip, then another 10kg plate, and then a spring lock collar. Now I can have the smooth plate against my body and use the tri-grip as handles and do squats with them. It is only suitable for up down motions, or static holds, like upright rows, farmers walks bent over rows etc. A off the shelf loading pin could be used like this too.

You could also just load up one side of a dumbbell with plates and put the collar on, then lift it up with the empty side away from your body. If you only put on 1 or 2 plates you could put to collars on the one side of the dumbbell, this means you can adjust them so the collar is flush with the end of the bar so it doesnt stick out against your leg.
