Well not being a canon person I've been told many things about the L series but one thing seems a bit unclear.

Can all L series lenses be shot wide open without loss of noticeable quality? or is this just an issue with non L glass.?

    Help help canonites....

I think in comparision with non L glass the answer is yes.

My L glass is sh*t sharp wide open.

There's some vignetting alright, but I don't mind that too much.

    Thinking of changing over Seb?

I have to say I have not managed to take my L glass off since I got it... it think it might be glued on or something, but hey I dont care, I dont like the others anymore now anyway. :p

LOL not a hope in hell. Happy with the lenses I have.
I just never got the whole not using your lens wide open because of loss of quality thats all.

I think some of the non L lenses suffer a loss of quality when shot wide open but I have no problems shooting L glass wide open.

Some L lenses are not great wide open, there's plenty of MTF charts to prove it.

I use mine either wide open or half a stop down and have to say that I'm happy with the results though. So yep, as far as I'm concerned they are indeed sharp wide open. Whether they're Large or Medium Format sharp is another thing.

But.... I've recently read that some olypmus kit lenses are a match for some Canon L's so where does that leave the whole 'wide open L' argument?

Then again the whole sharp thing is dependent on an awful lot of factors, copy to copy variation being one of the bigger.

Oly made one bad kit lens (17.5mm - 45mm) but then tried to rectify that be releasing the 14-42mm and the 40-150mm both of which use ED glass and preforming like the pro range minus the f2.8 and metal mount.
