On my new pooter (Vista) the mouse has developed a habit of moving across the screen without an external assistance. Any ideas?

Are you using an optical mouse on a shiny surface. This is very common.

Its optical and yes the mat is rather well used and shiny. Its also curling at the edges. Time for a new one. :)

for an optical mouse a matt finish is best, the cardboard on the back of a refill pad is great. Junk mail is too shiny these days

I had a similar problem in the past where my speakers were sitting beside the mouse or the mouse receiver and the speakers affected the way the mouse worked.... although if it's a new pooter then it sounds more like the surface under the mouse....
