What does it take to become an accountant?

For somebody with no experience at all, how would one approach a career change into accountancy?

What traits are beneficial to have to expect to succeed in accountancy?

Where is the starting point and is it unrealistic to expect to succeed when making this change when in your late 20's?

Just wondering if anyone can shed some light on this for me.

    Thanks

More and more candidates, such as myself, are taking the exams in their late 20s. The sheer amount of study required can be a bit daunting at times. Expect a significant salary cut, and be prepared to work very hard.

In terms of beneficial traits, if you're thick then forget about it. Having an apptitude for figures etc is obviously beneficial, but there is a significant diversity in the educational backgrounds of accounting students.

Oh I dunno, I've met a few that must have persevered. :D

Would this be a good introduction, doing this course. I need a distance learning introduction at the moment. Or is there some course I should do before this.

Or is there another plausible approach?

    Thank you all for replies.

I'm sure it would be a good foundation. Really depends on how much time you have on your hands though. Alot of that stuff was covered in junior cert commerce, but it would certainly give you a good grounding.

Bit on the pricey side though. You could research the basics in a library/online.

I actually did this course a few years ago and now I am doing the IATI course and I am in my second year. If I hadn't done this course first I would have been lost with the IATI so I would recommend it. I want to do chartered after I am finished.
