Hmmm, good idea there Kenco - to add in a high-profile course you weren't impressed with...

For me, the K-Club (non-Ryder Cup venue) was a huge letdown. SWAMP! Played Killeen the same week and it was bone dry...

Also, although it's undoubtedly a beautiful course, I'm no big fan of the Monty @ Carton House... For someone who sprays it a bit off the tee, it can be a nightmare...

I've only played around 12 or 13 courses in Ireland so far so i'll not embarass myself by making a list. The best i've played was probably Headfort New though, closely followed by Hollywood lake, which i though was a great course. Other than that i haven't really played too many special ones. Maybe this time next year i'll be able to make my top ten!

Slightly off topic, but i was reading this month's Golf Monthly and it does its usual end of year medal awards for courses. In ireland it gives a gold star to Narin &Portnoo.

Silver awards went to... Ballinrobe, Carrick-On-Shannon, Castle Dargan, Corballis, Headfort (Old), Kenmare, Roscommon and Knock.

I was a member of Stackstown for years. I always liked it, but it was just too hilly.

I don't mean to offend any members, but I just don't understand the inclusion of Hollywood Lakes. It's a grand course, but that's about it, in my opinion.

Haven't played Citywest since around this time 2yrs ago. Just really like the place. Everything about it is always in lovely shape. Have they made changes recently? Maybe needed a bit of length added but other than that I would have left it alone. Great finishing hole too..

Aw crap, really? Old course was a real joy. I always liked and can never remember playing badly around it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 883 ✭✭✭Brockagh

I live beside the Citywest Courses. I never was that gone on the old course. I like going out to the new course as it's in good nick and is grand for hitting irons on. Nothing too special, though.

Their new course in Johnstown (PGA National) is way over the top. Very artificial, although enjoyable all the same.

Portmarnock old course is stunning. It is no doubt the best in ireland. Ive played all the best and this is the best. Also if you are up in Donegal you have to play St Patricks. Really cheap as it is unknown. Unbelivable course and stunning views.

    In no particular order....

    Carton (Montgomerie)
    European Club

In order, I have ten courses but I refuse to put the parkland courses and the links courses together in a list, they are totally different styles of course and they offer a completely different challenge, the only thing about it is that we are blessed with so many fine links courses that I have to put seven of them down here and leave out a lot, like Tralee, Rosapenna and Portmarnock, and the also leave out the likes of the K-club and the Slieve Russell from the Parkland section.

    Two rankings, links and parkland.

    1. Carne(Belmullet)
    2. Ballybunion
    3.(joint) Rosses Point and Enniscrone

I think the Nicklaus thing fell through. St. Patricks is dreadful, played it in the north-west alliance about 18months ago and the greens hadn't been cut in literally weeks, not to mention the fairways. there were also pipes stuck in every fairway from Nicklaus' crowd

People were asked to put up "their" top 10 courses, not yours.
