Settle a bet please.... Question about "The Nuts"

Hi guys, we're trying to settle a bet on the definition of "the nuts", so please feel free to post your view.

OK, I suppose the easiest way is to give an example.

    My hole cards Qc 10d

    Flop 8s 9h Jh

A player goes all in and I call, is it correct to say I flopped the nuts??

Or, because my hand can be beaten on turn & river does this mean that I did not flop the nuts.

I've 50 quid on this so I hope I'm right.......

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,900 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

Yeah you are right. You flopped ze nuts.

Even if you flop quad aces, on a rainbow board, you can get out drawn to runner runner straight flush

Thanks boys, I knew I was right.......

BUT... my mate is here beside me and he still thinks he's right!!

He wants to argue his point with ye so the next few posts on my username will be him.

but how can u have the nuts if u loose the hand

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,900 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

because the nuts potentially change every card
    You flopped the nuts
you got it in with the nuts
but runner runner changed the nuts and by the end of the hand

The Nuts means you have the best possible hand available at any point certain point in a hand

    THis is Eamonn back again

    This is a factual hand

I have the hand as stated above and the turn was 5d.

We were all in on the turn and I declared "I have the nuts"

    Right or Wrong??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,187 ✭✭✭Flushdraw

Personally i never say i have the nuts until the river. I'll always say i flopped a straight, or a flush or whatever but i save sayin that i have the nuts until the betting is finished and the river card is dealt

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,327 ✭✭✭NeoSlicerZ

Omaha taught me; there is the current nuts, and the immortal nuts.

Right. The term "the nuts" refers to the best possible hand at any given point in a hand. It is possible to have a different nuts on the flop, the turn and the river. The only time the nuts is unbeatable is if it is the nuts on the river or the other player is drawing dead. You have the "nut straight" in the above hand and the other player, i assume, has a flush draw. Unless it is the A high flush draw or a straight flush draw with hits he is only drawing to a better hand, not the nuts.

The nuts can change so often it can make you sick sometimes. It only refers to the hand at any given point.

5d won't change a thing if you're talking about the nuts...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,900 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

The nuts is the current best hand. The stone colds nuts is the best hand and can't be outdrawn.

All flopped nut hands except straight flushes can be outdrawn, and even some of these could too.

    danny back again
so do u think my friend was wrong to declare he had the nuts when all in on the turn
as it happens he gets bet when his opponents 2 pair made a full house on the river

no. he the nuts (best possible hand at the time)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 222 ✭✭TheBlackThing

no. he the nuts (best possible hand at the time)

but surely hes wrong to declare he has the nuts when so many hands can beat him

After you're playing poker for a while, you'll here many stories along the line of.............

"I flopped the fcuking nuts and he hit runner runner" or "I turned the nuts, and the fcuker filled his boat on the river"

This is the reason i avoid saying i have the nuts until the river is dealt. Its the temporary nuts, but he's still right in saying he has the nuts.

    I'll give you an example..

    I have 8s7c
    You have Ad7d

    Flop is 6d5d4c

Technically i flopped the nuts as i have the best hand possible at the moment but i'm still only 57% to win the hand by the river. Its a scenario where the nuts will be beaten quite a lot

does nobody agree with me that he was wrong to declare the nuts on the turn

You've lost this bet so bad. He is absolutely correct to declare he has the nuts cause he does. Many hands can catch on the river and beat him but, when he declares he has the nuts he has the best possible hand. In this hand he is a 90.90% favourite to win the hand on the turn. The luckbox next to him got his miracle card but you owe your mate who correctly declared the nuts €50 so im sure he'll feel a bit better

    No mate, you are wrong...

on the turn he did have the nuts, again as said before, the best possible hand at the time...whether it finishes being the nuts/winning hand is a different matter but he did have the nuts on the flop and turn

    no pay the piper

unless you bet actually was a sick prop where you bet on how many times people actually expained what the nuts means, then my friend you must ave serious problems understanding things . . .

here's one for ya to argue, how can the glass be half empty if its half full . . .jimbob here does anyone think im right in saying its not half full . . . sorry daniel here . . . i think its half full . . . sorry ricky bobby here, shake and bake.

You still have the nuts on the turn no matter what he had.....but the nuts is only the best hand at that time.....What did he have?

    Eamonn back

Right Niall, I'll give you the exact details.

    Pub tourney (as you know)

    Level 1 blinds 25/50

    5th hand of the night

Starting stack 8000, (we all have about the starting stack, no actio so far)

    6 handed

    Folded to me in C/O

I limp with Q 10 off, button folds, SB calls, BB checks

    Flop 8x Jh 9h

    SB bets 600 (wtf!!!!!!!!!!!)

BB raises to 1200 (wtf wtf wtf!!!!)

I think for a while (afraid of flush draw) and raise to 3600

    SB folds

    BB calls

    Turn 5d

    BB bets 3000

I raise all in for remainder, thing it was 1800 or so.

    BB calls

    I declare " I have the nuts"

River 9x ( cue Eamonn walking out of the room and punching numerous walls in the gents toilet, followed by chain smoking 20 marlbro lights in the minutes and vowing never ever 2 play poker again)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,156 ✭✭✭cuterob

the nuts is the best possible hand at the time that can be made on the flop..then 4th street occurs and then 5th street occurs in which the nutz can possibly change..its not hard

e.g 2005 wsop ME: joe hachem v andy black

andy raises under the with QQ..folded around to hachem in the big blind who calls with A7 of clubs..flop comes Qxx all clubs..hachem checks..Andy moves all in as someone would without any club in their hand so as their opponent doesnt get a cheap turn holdin one club..hachem calls and gets up out of his chair and says 'nuts'..andy had to catch a Q or pair the board obviously on the turn and river which would change the best hand

i'm pretty sure all of that was pointless which i just wrote

    your owed 50 squid

the stone cold nuts in your hand above is 99..but seeing as the other guy wasnt holding it and it wasn't in play then you have the nuts

Still dont know what his hole cards were....Doesnt really matter....Only hand you can fear is the flush draw and you are going to run against that....either way you got your money in with "nuts" best hand, whatever you want to call it so as we all know you made the right play and lost.

By the way i cant blame either of you in that hand. You didnt raise pre flop so he can put u on a set and your re reraise probably made him think you wouldnt do that with the nut straight. Either that or he doesnt rate you as a player Eamon and put you on a lower 2 pair :))

Dont even go there Niall or we'll have to take this to the theory forum

I can not see any way he could think he was ahead with my reraise on the flop that early in the tournie

I'm definitely folding in his position 100% of the time.

When did you become such a rock......Lets think back to the Irish Open.....U go all in in position with 88 and SB calls you with AQ....Now i can concur that there was a lot of wall slapping, marlboro smoking, Vodka/Red Bull drinking that night :)

It was actually 77 and i reraised him

but I agree that was probably the worst hand I ever played

But I'm blaming fatigue on that one ( fcuk it, I have 2 blame something!)
