Chicago 2007 WC.....

Action is under way in Chicago. Below is the AIBA link with all the participants and live scoring. Very effective website I must say. The Irish lads so far have a decent draw. I haven't checked them all, but Egan, Donovan, Sutherland and both Joyce's seem to have
avoided the strong countries for their first fights. Like I always say, there is NO such thing
as an easy draw in amateur boxing....

    http://www.aiba.org/

The site is handy to navigate through.

Are the Cubans fighting in these championships?

I haven't been able to locate a CUB fighter from the draws...

I have scrolled through looking for 'CUB', and I cannot locate any....

Here's a simple link to the draw

The Cubans withdrew because they are worried about their boxers doing a runner once they get to the States.

There's a story here about it

Undermines the entire championship of course. I remember watching the Cubans in Belfast when the c'ships were held there - incredible talents.

Any tv channels picked this up in these parts? would be a sin not to see a bit of action from it.

Seems John Joe Joyce took a pasting in his opener.....report here

Possibly Ireland's classiest boxer loses in the first rd

    http://www.aiba.org/documents/site1/wch_chicago/C65B074.pdf

That's two from Athy out in the first rd...

Four of the five judges all saw it roughly the same and in favor
of the Brazilian. The other judge had Joyce the winner by 2 points.
    This computer scoring sucks!!!!

Apparently Sutherland has received a walkover, and is through to 2nd round

Barnes is doing very well as I speak

    He wins fairly comfortably, brilliant!!!!

Four of the five score Barnes the winner by a decent
margin and one judge has his opponent the winner by 36-29.
Again, proof that this system is not close to being perfect

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 57,356 ✭✭✭✭walshb

Ahern is due in the ring very shortly in his
    51kg bout (139)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 57,356 ✭✭✭✭walshb

    Ahern is beaten....

Again 4 judges had Ahern losing convincingly and one judge had Ahern the winner.
    Very strange

John Sweeney beat his Serb opponent (ref stopped it in the fourth round) and now faces a Russian on Tuesday.

I was looking at the team on the iaba.ie website and it's amazing that four of the boxers are from the one club (St. Michael's Athy).

    2 - v Serbia Won RSC 1.54 r4
    3 - v Russia
    QF - v Ukraine/Azerbajan

    ---
Donovan is fighting a man who stopped him in the EU championships in Dublin, and is ranked 3rd in the world (ABA rankings). Donovan beat him once previously. Egan is fighting a world silver medallist. In the ABA european ranklings the Croatian is 2nd and Egan is 4th Sutherland is fighting the South american champion. Its obviously going to be very tough for Sweeney. Have no idea about Barnes' opponent

    Sutherland and Sweeney are GONE!!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,328 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

Sweeney was to be expected. Shame about Sutherland, just hope he makes it through one of the other events now (much harder than in the past IMO)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 24 wardyeire

well apart from the Chinese judge the scores were well in favour of Blanco over Sutherland. As for Sweeney i think he did very well to go the distance against the Russian.:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,621 ✭✭✭yomchi

Pity about Sutherland, at least there's still plenty of time for him to go again.

Sutherland looked very sluggish in the last two rounds and couldnt handle the reach of the Venezulan - pity.

Good to see Joe Murray of Moss Side, Manchester go through - on of the boys at works said to me that his parents were Irish - not sure if its true but most white people in Miss Side are 1st, 2nd or 3rd generation Irish so could be

does anybody know how ken egan got on??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,328 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

    Egan and Donovan lost.

Barnes our only olympic qualifier from this tournament

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,328 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

    Barnes was beaten 22:8

Still a good tournament for him

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,494 ✭✭✭finbarrk

Does this mean that Barnes will be our only boxer in Beijing?

Nope, he's the only boxer qualified so far. There are two further european qualification tournaments. I think a total of 8 europeans can box at each weight so the amount of places on offer depends on how many europeans book their spots at this tournament. In Sutherland's middleweight division 3 europeans have qualified. In Egan's Lightheavy division 5 europeans are through

An excellent win for England's Frankie Gavin in the 60kg division which
seen him beat Tischenko in the semi final and an Italian in the final.
Tischenko was considered the best amateur of them all....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,430 ✭✭✭megadodge

Is Tischenko the redheaded Russian who won the feather gold in the last Olympics ?

If so, I always found it surprising he won so much, he just didn't look exceptional, but then again there's no arguing with his record.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 57,356 ✭✭✭✭walshb

Yes he did win the 57kg Olympic title and I too didn't regard him as brilliant. He was very good obviously, but a little too overrated by the pundits.
IMO, Khan would have been way too much for Alexy.....

Gavin is very good, but a notch below the 17 year old Olympic Khan.....
