    Hi there,

Am looking at going beyond the usual jumping and dressage - does anyone know if there are any riding clubs out there that cover le trec ? It seems to be rare at the moment and I would love to give it a go (dublin region)

Excuse my ignorance, but what exactly is le trec?
Sorry I can't offer any help though.

I think its like endurance riding? Im not sure though. I think its faster and tougher than standard endurance. They use pure bred arabs. Good for nothing else i suppose!!!

    Hi

Le Trec is great fun.. for details of riding clubs that are involved contact www.airc.ie

I don't think there is an association here yet for LeTrec but it is quite popular. I have had a go (for fun) with my TB in the UK on several occasions and it's very easy especially at the lower levels. Nothing as hard as even novice endurance and you certainly don't need an Arab!! It is designed so any horse can take part. :)

The first section is POR (basically orienteering on a horse).. for level 1 it's a max of 12km.. it's a timed section but not a race.

The second section is gait control - This phase is designed to demonstrate that the rider can exercise a degree of influence over the horse first in canter, then in walk following a straight line course of 150 metres long and 2-4 metres wide. The concept is that the slower the horse travels in canter, and the faster in walk, the greater the marks awarded.

The third section is PTV.. a cross between XC and handy pony! The course is generally 1km to 5kms long. While this phase does include some cross-country jumping, the size of the obstacles is set according to the level of competition and each obstacle is optional and does not incur elimination if bypassed. You get points for the stuff you do and just don't get points for the stuff you miss out.. There are all kinds of obstacles - gates..crossing bridges.. dismounting and remounting from the off side etc.. it's a good laugh!

The points are all added from over the 3 phases and the winner is the one with the most. It's a very social sport and we have been to a couple of events that run over 2 day - the evening BBQ's (and following hangovers) were legendary! It's a huge sport - with world champs etc!

Definitely have a go if you can - you can get more info on the sport here..

I am also trying to find a riding club that does it and/or LeTrec in Ireland so I may well see you about! It's perfect for my older horse too.

I think there was a National Riding Club Le Trec day in Galway last year... but it hasnt really taken off here yet. If you joined a local club perhaps you could start something.
I'd love to take part in that kind of competition as well.

This months "Irish Horse Review" have a very good article on it. I buy my copy in Easons on O`Connell Street for €2.80.
