On last night Ross Kemps Gangs episode, which was film in East Timor, various clips of Silat Training were shown. Silat was been used by the gangs in East Timor as the means to defend themselves. The programme was mainly based on the gangs conflicts with each other and trying to gain control on the country. Seeing Silat been train there was excellent to see. Was abit shock when Ross Kemp guide mention two of the places to experience silat outside of Indonesian was in London and Dublin.

Yeah saw this last night. Intriguing stuff.

How close is the connection between East Timor gangs and the European Silat community (or is there any at all)?
Are you worried about negative publicity after that show, or worried that you’ll have gangs of nutters showing up at your door to train “because it looked bleedin’ deddily on da telly”?

Are there other gangs around the world who are formed around MA’s, rather than being connected by a soccer team or neighbourhood etc.?

    Too many questions?

Were they using it to attack and commit crimes also?

    Hi DITTKD

There no connection at all between East Timor Gangs and the group of guys that train in Silat in Ireland, except we train in the same physical art. Don't think we get much negative publicity as Silat is a minority art form, and most people don't much about it or where to even find it. I just thought it was funny to see the Dublin silat community mention in East Timor, this must be where all my flyers for classes went to :D

    Basically yes, yes they were.
Don't know if you watch the show, but these guys, like every gang ever on the program, said they "were just defending themselves".

It's repeated tonight at 11.00 on Sky One.

Cheers for the info Silatliam, actually when I saw it I said "Oh, I know that stuff off Boards.ie!" :)
