Hi there, new to the forums.

I have a daughter who is 4 soon and was wondering what the lower age limit for taking up self defense? Basically I want her to learn a disipline for a few reasons - keep fit and healthy, social outlet and to discipline her mentally and physically.

So could anyone suggest one form over another and maybe some good classes/schools in Dublin?

    Chuck

    Hi chuck,

We run a martial arts club for children in Tallaght in our own facility - check it out on www.cleverlittlemonkeys.com

At 3/4, children's attention span is low, so we use a lot of gameplay to teach skills. Also, our classes are very interactive, so it's not like your daughter will be kicking air for an hour, they'll be racing other children, pinning, holding, and playing lightsabers throughout the class with kids her own age and older.

Owen Roddy has a class in Rathcoole as well. www.sbgireland.com is the main site for that. Owen's a fantastic coach. I think he's another one in south dublin, not sure if he's still running the Rathfarnham or the Crumlin class.

If you're on the Northside Barry Oglesby teaches a similar class to us - www.ko-martialarts.com, who I'd also recommend.

There's also SBG Northside - www.sbgnorthside.com, Richie Moore takes the kids out there. I've never seen him coach but his kids at competition time understand the sport, have great attitudes and are a happy bunch.

If you've any questions give me a shout on 086-8151092.

    Colm

    Hello Chuck,

I run a Kung Fu for kids program in Blackrock and Bray. Although we do not take them as young as 4 years old, at 5 years old we have a specialized Little cranes class in our Blackrock school.

Visit the Kids club at http://www.ymaa.ie for more information and if you have any queries please don't hesitate to contact me through the site.

We enroll twice yearly in September and January and run the terms in line with the school year.

    Goodluck.

It would be good for you to travel within a reasonable range of your residence and visit the MA dojos/dojangs/studios to observe the children's classes to see which might be a good fit for your daughter?

Does anyone know if there's anyone doing classes like Colm's nearer Blackrock?
