Hi, I've been using Eircom broadband for nearly two years now and never really had a problem with it. I have the 2mb package. I've been noticing that from around 6pm till midnight i get terrible download speeds noting even close to 2mb or 1mb for a matter of fact. Its been happening for the last few weeks.

And i was wondering if anybody else has noticed a similar problem???

This is the time when you really see how contention affects connection speeds. People coming home, going online -- it really comes to a halt. I have the same package with eircom. It's the same where I live.

Yep, its the contention alright, or more accurately youtube:D

    Were u from frank ?

I have been having the exact same problem for almost 3weeks now. Was perfect until then and now from about 6:30pm to 10:30pm each day its just s**t. Called eircom 3 times about it yesterday. They were getting me to ping sites like google.ie and i was getting 300ms.

I don't care about my download or upload speeds. Its just i want to be able to play WoW and i cant with the lag and lag spikes im getting.

There are always hotspots on a network where contention is an issue, fortunately I am on an exchange with SCADS of backhaul and do not get this problem :)

Remember poor dcully who spent months hassling eircom into providing more backhaul in Monasterevin about a year back , that could be you today :( read below .

As far as DSL goes in this country there are no suppliers that you get your 7mb in your example the whore time or even some of the time. Now you could look at other broadband types like Cable or Satellite. I hear cable like UPC is pretty good or Satellite Broadband not sure who supplies this but its not good for gaming but if that isn't a concern than you should be ok.

Don't listen to those idiots on the phones at eircom, these drops between 6pm and midnight are not caused by your router, your pc or contention. Eircom don't give a crap about their customers, thats the problem.

I've been having these problems for about 6 weeks now, i get about 300kbps all day then it comes back to normal speeds of around 2600/2800 after midnight.

Contention is just a good cover up they think, but unless you are mentally challenged you will realise that contention does not make your speeds drop by over 2000kbps.

Going to either Smart or UPC myself, just a few enquiries to make before i order. I suggest you change too if you are sick of these problems, maybe losing customers is the only way we can make this joke of a company care.

It can't be contention...If it was then why the hell wasn't broadband even remotely bad during last summer? Probably one of the peak broadband usage times.

I think Eircom users are getting scammed as nobody can really determine what broadband speeds Eircom send out to you. Eircom can send you 3mb/s but you may only receive 1.5mb.

For the past three months or so, my broadband, and a lot of people around the midlands that I know have complained about the broadband being slow everyday from roughly 6pm to 12am. It appears to be contention but I beg to differ, I believe it's Eircom just reducing their costs and we can't prove in anyway what exact speeds they are sending us.

By the way if you say,"I'm not getting what I'm paying for," then you should note that Eircom don't care if you say this because under their terms they say that they give you "Up to 3mb/s" which could be from 1mb/s to 2mb/s and then you get the occasional 3mb/s.

I can't see this stopping unless the majority of people complaining about this actually get off their arse and tell Eircom that you are experiencing terrible broadband speeds.

The reason Eircom can get away with this is because 95% of people say,"What the hell is up with the broadband?" and they just complain to their friends. How will your friends sort it out? Ring Eircom or switch your broadband for Jesus' sake.

Jesus, I just did that packet test to a person that lives 45 miles away and I got and average of about 90 ping!

I switched to imagine who use eircoms' own lines a few weeks ago, ping has gone to ****e

They've told me to downgrade to 3MB from 7MB as there is less "interleaving"

Downgrade to get a better service !!!!

Still nowhere nearer to getting 7MB...the best avg is 3.5Mb.. One day I got 8.25Mb for two seconds...

I have a new catch phrase...

    "EIRCOM....Cutting Edge Thicknology"...

This has nothing to do with interleaving. Interleaving will add 10-30 ms at most

I have 7.6 with interleaving at the lowest setting. U.TV tell me they can't turn it off altogether. During the day I get 29-33 ms to local sites. When it hits the evenings. I get this.

    Minimum = 160ms, Maximum = 188ms, Average = 171ms

If I wait an hour more I will be 400-500ms.

Eircom have serious bottlenecks and need to carry out upgrades but as customers have nowhere else to go, what's the point says Eircom.

Thanks to our toothless regulator the provision is a privilege not a right...

I'm from Lonford also, the lag here is insane. Getting well over 500ms while playing WOW and can't raid anymore. Also watching youtube is so terrible now takes forever to load anything. I did a trace route to a WOW server. The biggest lag spots where the ones in Ireland, it sent me up to eircom in Galway. Then I tried to ping the Eircom server, it sent four packets and I lost one of them. I did the same with youtube. Sent four packets and lost 1 of them. That's really terrible, I think cable or satellite might be better.

Completely appalling here in Dublin 8. Ever since they wrote to me saying i was getting upgraded to "Next Generation Broadband" the speed has just been getting worse and worse.

It would seem that "Next Generation Broadband" is going to be a hamster on a miniature bicycle bringing packets of data from one place to the next.

Disgracefully bad service. I would switch but been with bt before and they were just as bad.

Is UPC not available in your area? You could try that.

Super fast fiber broadband has just come into my Area?!
The 2mb was fine for me until it started to go slow.Look like I am been forced to change to fiber.
