Just found out about this now...and I have to admit, I'm dissapointed.
I just don't see Pegg as suitable Scotty material.

Even though I'm a big Stargate fan I wasn't over-joyed at the idea of Paul McGillion playing the role either....I felt James McAvoy would have been much betetr suited.
    What do others think?

Has he done the accent before in previous stuff ?

    Not that I've seend.
Though being English and being a trekkie, I'm sure he will pull it off.
    Even Paul McGillion could.

He just doesn't feel right to me...if ya get me...

what the fúck are you talking about? Have i missed something? A new star trek movie? Stargate?

    Explain man!!

Yeh, he's always been the straight man in his films rather than the comedy sidekick if you get me.

Although didn't he do the tech (jokey) guy role in MI:3, and he wasn't too bad.

It'll be interesting anyway, this new Trek cast is definitely shaping up to be something different. I assume they still haven't found their new Cpt. Kirk yet ?!

They did indeed. It's all on wikipedia.

    Wow.

Karl Urban is Doc McCoy  that's an infinitely more strange casting. And Eric Bana as the villain !

Nothing really strange with Bana as a baddie, ever see Chopper?

Karl Urban...hmmm...d'ye know, there actually is something of a physical resemblance when ye think about it. He'd be believable on looks alone as a young McCoy. God knows if he'll be any use at actually playing the part though.

Not to fussed at all about Pegg as Scotty, and I generally like Pegg's stuff. I can't see that working tbh.

Well its not so much I can't see Bana and Urban playing these respective roles.

My suprise is more to with the fact that I would class them as A-list actors and wouldn't have expected them to appear in a franchise like Star Trek. Fair play to Paramount / JJ Abrams for getting them on board.

Chris Pine is Kirk. Has anyone seen any of his work?

Urban and Bana are hardly on Hollywoods A-List radar, they would be on the crusters at best.
I remember when the word was that Matt Damon was going to be Kirk- now that would have been a coup[wouldnt have worked though].

Also, they've got Jada Pinkett Smith's clone as Uhura and John Cho () as Sulu. It's going to be... interesting.

Zachary Quinto looks spookily like a young Nimoy, so that's a good start. I would have thought Karl Urban would have been a better choice as Scotty though.

Yeh, Zachary Quinto definitely looks the part. And still can't get over Urban as McCoy - just can't see it.

I concede that Urban isn't cream of the crop yet. But, imo, Bana is definitely in that top bracket given his starring roles in Hulk, Troy, Munich and his two new upcoming films opposte other A-listers Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson and Rachel McAdams. Quite a coup in getting him by Abrams I think.

    Yeah. He's fairly wooden.

Yeah casting for Sci-Fi films are always tough. It's usually a cross between totally unknown faces, the odd high profile guy and Sci-Fi regulars.

Add to this that this is a Star Trek film and the casting gets tougher. All previous Star Trek films featured the casts of either TOS or TNG. So casting is in itself a completely new territory for them. Add JJ Abrams and you will be guaranteed some more weird casting.

I think Zachary Quinto is good and I think possibly a lot of the films will fall on him. Haven't seen Chris Pine in anything really so can't pass judgement but I think relative unknown was the way to go since this is about a young Kirk. Matt Damon was a serious contender but Abrams decided he was too old.

I can see Bana as a bad guy and I can see Pegg as Scotty - he won't have to do a 100% straight role either as Scotty isn't a very serious character. Not sure about Urban as McCoy though.

As for A-listers well Malcolm McDowell and Christopher Lloyd have played bad guys in previous Star Trek films so it's not completely unheard of

The casting of this film has been one bizarre announcement after another. Simon Pegg as Scotty?! Karl Urban as Bones?!! I was never a HUGE fan of the original series, but I'd never have seen either of these actors in these roles. Zachary Quinto as Spock- genius. The rest? A bit weird. Besides, why is a Star Trek reboot necessary?!

Apparently it's not going to be a reboot. It's going to stay true to canon and take place before TOS.

Nice trick if they can pull it off.
Also, and JIMHO, I just don't get the excitement about Zachary Quinto. I appreciate he has a vague physical resemblace to the young Leonard Nimoy. But other than that - what's so great about him?

Yeah apparently Eric Bana is playing a Romulan villain.

As for Zachary Quinto he's got this weird creepy thing going on and is able to ham it up a bit which makes him perfect for Spock IMO

Still though...really looking forward to this.

They do the same thing with every major franchise. Start rumours about various A-Listers being picked then miraculously end up choosing a relative unknown....not that it creates major PR and saves them money...nooooo.... The Bond movies are the worst for it - not that they choose bad people in the end just that initial set of casting rumours are nothing more than PR mill junk.

Can anyone explain the Star Trek timeline from the time of Archer to Kirk for me please?
Someone reckons there will be a cameo.
