Streaming, copying, Mac, PS3, and eyeTV 2.5

Like so many others, i have failed to get EyeConnect working to stream recorded TV programmes from my iMac to the PS3. Even using the upgraded EyeConnect v1.5 the PS3 refuses to play back the files, even though it can see them all. The FAQ on Elgato's site, does state that programmes recorded from DTT/DVB will cause problems.

I note however, that the legend 'the data is corrupted' no longer appears when I try to play back the file, since the introduction of 1.5, suggesting work has been done and that some progress is being made.

What has changed, as I have just discovered, is that programmes can instead be copied across and will now (mysteriously) play perfectly. Previously, copying OTA would be possible but the copied file would display the same 'the data is corrupted' result. No longer, the result is superb. Just select a given programme from your eyeTV library, press triangle and then copy.

Not the most elegant of solutions, but hey, it works.

Furthermore and contrary to Elgato's pronouncements on this, the (local) wifi access to recorded TV media as introduced in v2.5 of eyeTV is not confined to your home network only, something I moaned about in another thread. If you know your IP address, then your library can be accessed via xxx.xx.xx.xxx:2170/eyetv. Have your IP redirected via a crowd such as no-ip.org and hey presto, your TV library is available to you anywhere you have broadband access. I could never comprehend why you would want this at home anyway, since one mac will play back the contents from another Mac over the network, in any case.

Well. whaddya know?? I just got streaming from my iMac to my PS3 to work perfectly -am watching a programme recorded on BBC Four a week ago. I can't be sure yet but I suspect that programmes recorded since the installation of eyeTV2.5 PLUS eyeConnect 1.5 *will* stream. It's the older material that I had in my library that won't stream.

I bought a PS3 recently and the 1.89 software update it downloaded on power up enabled a feature involving DLNA - Digital Living Network Alliance - which allows anyone with a compatible device to stream audio and video to their PS3. To my dismay this support doesn't extend to iTunes. With almost 150GB of music shared from my iTunes server I'm reluctant to change it all for Windows */ goes off to gargle and wash keyboard with acid /*.

As the poster above has discovered, Eyeconnect gives some hope but I'd be happier not involving a third party app in the whole process. There are 2 reasons, firstly eyeconnect needs > 500MHz CPU - I use an old PowerMac G4 Dual 450MHz. Secondly I must buy the eyeconnect software to continue streaming video after the 30 day trial.

Now I don't begrudge Elgato reward for their efforts but as DLNA has been around for the past 4 or 5 years I'm wondering why Apple have decided to apparently ignore it. I'm also hoping that one of the many new features of 10.5 will be support for this protocol - although any searches I've done aren't too encouraging.

Do any of the beta testers here know if this is the case. Perhaps a few emails to Apple might have an effect ? If DLNA is going to be the future standard for in home media streaming and with PC's, accounting for 90%+ of computers in the home, all supporting it (With XP & Vista) isn't it essential for Apple to join up now. It's not just for PS3 owners either, their are many devices that are DLNA compliant including TV's HDD Recorders, games consoles and media players.

    Anyone any thoughts ?

    ZEN

DLNA support in iTunes would be an absolute godsend for me. My next purchase is going to be a 1TB RAID NAS, which has both DLNA and iTunes server functionality. That way, I can access all my media through iTunes and Front Row on my mac, as well as through my PS3.

Unfortunately streaming eyetv programmes only works intermittently -copying remains the most reliable method for now. However, sometimes when the programmes are copied, the only audio contained is a sort of commentary and not the original dialogue. Very strange.

As I hoped, Leopard has fixed the streaming issue to the PS3; I can now watch all my eyeTV recorded programmes streamed to the PS3 perfectly. There is no longer any need to copy them across to the PS3s HD.

Unfortunately Leopard has broken eyeTV so until that is fixed I cannot record any more programmes.
