Civilisation 4 graphics help

I bought civilisation 4 yesterday but I'm having real trouble getting it. i think there may be a problem with the graphics on my laptop. Whatever terrain I use the land is black. You can only see your units, a few trees nearby and some wavy lines. I really don't think this is right because there's no way to see what's around you, even if you send scouts out to explore. They go forward and the land remains black. Also, the leader pictures (e.g caeser, queen Victoria etc) are not proper pictures, there some eyes and some teeth and maybe a hat. In the manual you can see the full person's face so me and my bf don't have a clue what's going on? From looking at pictures online and in the manual it seems that you're supposed to be able to see the terrain clearly. I can only presume there's something wrong with the graphics on my laptop. Does anyone else have this game? Should I be able to see things clearly? It seems impossible because i can't see what's going on! Thanks

That phrase is a bad omen. What chipset is in the laptop?

Have you applied the lastest patch ?

Yep, applied the patch but it still wouldn't work. From my research it seems to be a common problem. i installed it on my bf's laptop and it worked fine. Although I'm not really liking it as a game!

TBH I didn't like it the first time I played it either. It does have the same ability as earlier games to eat your spare time though. 'Borrow' your boyfriend's laptop and keep at it :)

I had the same problem with Civ IV on my laptop; unfortunately I can't remember what I did to sort it... if anything. I play it on my PC now :)

    Loooooooooove it.
