Hellew, alot of you will be fimiliar with this game on the N64 or on the Wii's Virtual Console. I managed to get it on the N64, but I'm having problems playing the single player game. I can only play the Challenges for some reason. Do you have to complete so many challenges before the game will let you play the single player campaign? I know this is a stupid thread to post but I'm at a loss here, and I don't have a manual. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I can't remember seeing as i aint played it in a long time but did it not need the expansion pack for the n64 to run ?

I had it myself and i am almost sure i got it with the expansion pack.So i presume it needs it to play.

It was a great game i didnt know it was on the VC i might go and download it.
Do you need a N64 controller to play it?

You can only play challenges without an expansion pak. If you have one in the N64 then it's mostly likely that you have dirty connectors. Take the pak out and plug it in again. If that doesn't work then clean the connectors and try again.

1st level PD 64 was one of the best in FPS games ever.

The expansion pak is very hard to remove, even to grasp, you'd need tweasers or something and I'm afraid I'll damage the machine. Just so we are clear, the memory expansion is just infront of the game pak slot right?

And while were speaking about cleaning, the Nintendo manual says you shouldnt blow into the machine or cartridges or use alcohol to clean it. So what are you supposed to use?

Then you don't have an expansion pak. You will need to get one to play Perfect Dark. Good luck with that since they are very hard to come across unless you want to use ebay. Took ages to find my one.

I'm in Canada right now, every pawn shop, flea market and garage sale has stuff like this, but thanks - appreciate the help :)

I got my expansion pak when I got donkey kong 64, (which I happened to of started playing again the other day).

As for blowing into the console, well most of the time my games play 1st time but if they don't I blow into the cartridge and it works fine.

The expansion pack has a red top as apposed to the brown normal one.

One of the best games I've ever bought. If only I could find my n64, I know it's around here somewhere....

ya Perfect Dark for the 64 was something special, Perfect Dark Zero for the 360 is pretty crap in comparison.

    Master of the Universe

I found my own expansion pak about two years ago while rummaging through a rather large pile of consoles in the loft in a charity shop.

By chance the cover where it goes was missing from one of the n64s. So the red top stood out a mile. I was rather happy with that find.

Never got around to playing through Perfect Dark myself. Might pick up a copy from ebay now actually.

I'm probably going to get skinned alive for saying this. Despite Goldeneye and PErfect Dark being hugely influential FPS games that really shaped every FPS created afterwards, nowadays I feel they have dated so badly that they are virtually unplayable and frankly crap.

DK64, ah the memories. Quality game but god, some of the bananas are hard to get. It took me about 6 months to beat the rabbit in that race. Only managed it in the end because I killed a critter and an orange replaced him which blocked the rabbits path and he couldnt go around. Then theres some easy ones like those blueprints. What a waste of time they were.

You're probably right (I'm not sure because I haven't played either in about 4 years) but at the time they were amazing games. I played them so much I knew each level off by heart as I'm sure others did too.

Thank you! You've just reminded me of what game I need to finish. Moved from England a year and a half ago and the N64 hasn't really been used much since. This is going to be my top priority this week! <3 DK 64.

Retrogamer, you will have to answer for your crimes sooner rather than later, this type of blasphemy can't go unpunished.

    A suitable sentence....

I know, changing you online name from "Retrogamer" to "buyer of yearly updates of FIFA, aren't they the best, I don't buy anything else gamer" and adding "I don't understand Defender, too many buttons" as your sig.

Ah here, the attention to detail that's in Perfect Dark is still to be matched in most console FPS, including Perfect Dark Zero. I know it looks and feels dated now, but that's mostly to do with the graphics and sound which were pretty much at the limit of the N64's capability. Gameplay, controls and atmosphere are all there in bucketloads...

Man, I wish Perfect Dark was on the VC!

perfect dark has not aged badly! it wasn't even one of those groundbreaking-therefore-is-good-when-clearly-it's-alright games, it's still soooo playable!

I'm going to shoot all those Perfect Dark is brilliant comments with just one word:

Had the N64 out at a gamesfest a while back and played PD - it's so s-l-o-w in comparison to all fps out in the last few years. Still enjoyed it though.

They are both still sublime games, the only thing that kills now is the frame rate...
