I am looking for a wide angle lens for a Canon 350d.

I was in a camera shop this morning in Dublin this morning and there where 2 there

    Tokina 12-24 pro dx
    or
    Sigma 10-20 f4-5.6

Both €500, are these price good are the lens any good or is there another lens I should be going for.

You advice would be much appricated.

    Thanks in advance
    Al

Well I'd recommend the Sigma 10-20mm great lens especially with good sunlight. Also using it with the 350D. One thing to bear in mind, if you plan on upgrading to a full frame sensored Canon in the future it is not compatible with it. Doesn't effect me as I plan on upgrading late next year to the 40D.

I have the Sigma and its a super lens, I have taken some really unusual shots with it.

The Canon EF-S 10-22mm lens is worth considering too ... just to confuse matters. :D It's the only EF-S lens I own, and it's great.

I too think the Sigma is great. The Tokina is a terrific lens but the extra 2 mm at the wide end makes a big difference.

The price seems good for both of these lenses. I would have thought the Tokina was marginally better but is not available for the Alpha mount cameras I have. One thing to be careful of, particularly with the Sigma, is that these ultra wide lenses can be prone to centreing problems. This means that the picture can be out of focus on one side.

I bought the Sigma 12-24 in preference to the 10-20 because of its full frame ability, coverage is 122 degrees with full frame with fairly straight lines.

I got the sigma 10-20 a few weeks back and am loving it so far :) I got it for about €400 from a Scotland-based ebay seller. It comes with a lens hood and a nice Sigma carry case that I'll never use.
You have a Canon camera so this won't matter to you, but for anyone that has a Nikon D40/40x this will autofocus on it too, which is nice. Naturally it AF's on everything else already.

Here's a sample taken with it recently:
