    Hey people,

I was wondering if you could help me. I've some Items at home that I have no use for nor am getting any enjoyment out of. Mainly cd's, books and dvd's. I'm considering joining EBay and want to know is it a good place to sell of these items or more. There is nothing wrong with the items. They are all in good condition. I've rarely used most of these honestly. They are just sitting there gathering dust.

So can anyone help me? I just need some feedback on this. Keep it in mind that I am an EBay virgin.

    All opinions welcome :)

I regularly sell off unwanted stuff on eBay, but bear in mind that unless your stuff is collectable or unique, that you probably won't get that much for it.

Go to eBay and search for similar items, see how much they sell for and see if it's worth your while. eBay charge insertion fees for hosting the ad, and then there is a commission on the sales price. Finally, PayPal will also take a cut for handling the money transfer. It all adds up.

No costs, you place your ad and a desired price. People can make offers below this and it's up to you whether to accept or wait for someone closer to your price. It's not an auction though and you'll be banned if you treat it as one.

You can sell pretty much anything that isn't illegal. No warez, no "backups", no pr0n, no tickets and no live animals. There are probably a few more so read the rules first.

eBay is probably going to get you a wider audience but if the items are just CDs and DVDs then you'd probably be looking at a few euro each and would end up paying most of it to eBay and Paypal in costs.

The only other thing you could do is use the Buy and Sell magazine, or if there's a car boot sale nearby you could use that.

Yep I agree with the guys above. Selling CD's and DVD's through E-bay will be time consuming and hardly worth the effort. take a look at the Discs FS section on Adverts.ie and you'll see plenty of people selling stuff. Should give you an idea of how to word and list your items.

Investigate your postal prices as well so you don't get stung when selling a DVD for €5 and having to buy a padded envelope and €1.50 or whatever it is to post.

Have to repeat that warning on postage, especially on the Books.

If you charge too much no one will buy.
If you charge too little you won't break even , especially if a parcel doesn't arrive and insurance isn't really an option at that price range so you'd have to take their word for it.

And there there are the buyer scams on eBay , where they send you too much and demand change.

Or if you were going to donate a couple of quid to a charity anyway then instead you could donate the stuff to a local charity shop and save a lot of hassle.

But if you were going to donate several hundred to charity then do it properly so the charity can claim back your income tax.

maybe your right, i didn't necessarily want to make a profit out of them, i just want to see them put to some use. is there any particular charity people would recommend? so as the stuff would be sold and benefit charity and buyer?

Oxfam only want books in very good condition and tend to charge more for them. I don't know if the pass on the rejects or just dump them. After that pick a charity, the scruffier the books in the shop the less they tend to charge/make on them.
