Right, I know we've discussed this in various places here before but I don't think there is a thread for it yet so I decided to start one.

Does anyone have any idea when UPC will launch HD?

Please don't post any useless answers, I am looking for things people have heard or know (DingDong, Tax man ;) ) or any line up / features that are coming or would be nice.

    Next year say UPC.

Does this answer pass your standards?

Whatever the date is, it will only be launched in the very limited areas that has cable that can support HD. So I would think it's irrelevant.

What do you mean by very limited areas? And where are they?

You're rather aggressive aren't you? I'm looking for information (which you did give) I'm trying to point out I don't want "UPC are useles... " answers. I don't think that's an unreasonable request. As your mother should have said "If you've nothing nice to say, don't say anything."

In fairness, you didn't divulge on your idea of "useless" posts.

Irrelevant is probably a better word to describe the replies you don't want.

Calm down dear, you never specified what was useless.

I'm a UPC MMDS customer in an old NTL area. I have e-mailed them about a week ago asking about HD on MMDS. I had a call (not from their customer service) and the lady I spoke to said they had plans earlier in the year but they had not progressed.

I'm open to correction here but, she seemed to imply that the old NTL MMDS network was currently capable of HD transmissions, and they had hoped to have engineering tests in place by the end of 2007. But this was likely to slip into Q1 2008.

At the moment, the best I got from them was that it was in the pipeline. I've no idea what progress there is on cable. Though I believe there are areas in Dublin (Raheny?) which have been upgraded and had some channel changes to facilitate HD test transmissions.

Sorry, but thats all I know, some of which is from 3rd parties and could of course be rumor rather than fact.

Actually, maybe ignore my post. The only thing I know for a fact it that they've told me not this year!

Well, I would imagine they will launch the service in areas that they have high bandwidth cable installed. i.e. areas of Dublin, Cork etc that have had recent cable-rewiring and installation of fiber trunks etc ...

The technical division is really now UPC Cable vs UPC MMDS. The old NTL/Chorus divide is fast vanishing as the cable platforms become identical in the major cities at least.

Puggy, that's a good post, thank you. I'm hoping that now that the DVR is out, and doing quite well from what I've heard, it'll motivate them into getting more new services on stream.

Irrelevant was a better word. No need for snide comments due to semantics though.

Well plenty of people have HDTV ready televisions, they've been selling like hot cakes over the last few months so there's definitely a demand there for HD offerings. Sky's not everyone's cup of tea, particularly if you're in an urban area, the UPC digital offering's pretty good. For apartment dwellers, and people who just don't want a dish it's ideal. Also, sky's HD price point is a little too high at the moment.

I'd say if UPC offered HD content the uptake would be pretty high.

The DVR's selling despite very little advertising from them at all. It's nearly by word of mouth. They really ought to give it a catchy name though. Everyone knows what Sky+ is. They need a simpler name for UPC's offering.

I haven't heard anything different from everyone else. I'd say it will be next early next year though. I'd much prefer to have VOD to HDTV though as I've never really been sold on HD(maybe if I had 60" TV and there were a lot more HD channels I might be)

I just bought a HD TV, that's why I'm suddenly interested. True, VOD would be a better service but now that I have HD capability I want to see what I can do. :)

The reason I mentioned the limited areas was because the last time I paid any attention to UPC's plans they were installing a cable network in a new west Dublin area and it was seemingly designed to handle HD. I think this was about a year ago maybe. That would imply that a lot of the rest of the network is not designed to handle HD. I could well be wrong but the history of NTL's network is that any rollout is slow and limited, beyond the basic stuff, so I don't tend to get overly excited about their plans/vapour.
