Coughing while running

This seems to happen to me once in a while. I'll get an overwhelming urge to 'clear my throat' after running for a few kms. There is nothing really there (sorry to be vile, but no 'gobbies') but it gets quite irritating.

Has anyone else experienced this? Just asking, as a guy beside me in the gym last week started the same thing after a few mins in. Could I just be unfit?!

Does the threadmill which you run on have a small fan on the dashboard blowing air at you? If so it may be dusty and blowing bits and pieces into your face / lungs.

No, nothing like that. There are A/C units in the ceiling above me, but the roof is quite high.

When I was massively unfit I'd run which resulted fairly quickly in gasping which dried my throat out and caused a cough. It affected me more after I had stopped running.

However, I've just started running again (when I say again it's more like for the first time) and I don't get it anymore but then I've been cycling to work for 2 years so I'm way more fit than I was before.

Maybe it's the way I'm breathing is drying my throat out?
I find I can't get enough air in through my nose, so I breathe in through my mouth.
