Just wondering how good (if at all) poppy seeds are for you? Threw a pack in the trolley in Tescos last week (not sure why, they were 99c or something!) and have been throwing em in my porridge and cereal since...

    Thanks!

meh, they're not bad for you anyway, high in calcium and they'll have plenty of good fats in them. Just don't go for an opiate test <24 hours after eating them ;)

    Thanks...

What porridge-thrower-inner would you recommend that'd do a better job than Poppy seeds?

milled flax seeds are always a winner - lots of omega-3

alternatively sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds (great natural Test booster) or just get a tub of mixed seeds.

Can these all be supermarket bought?

Yeah, in tescos they are normally all together in the health food section.

Yeah Tesco do a tub of mixed seeds (includes your poppys) called Good4U or something like that but it's cheaper if you buy a 500g bag of flax, pumpkin, sunflower, whatever else seeds and mix em up youself.

Other good porridge mixer-inners would be fruit - blueberries, raspberries etc, even banana and nuts, mixed nuts, walnuts, almonds etc

A bottle of flax seed (linseed) oil can be bought for 7-8eur in most health food stores.
I've never had the seeds - but throw a teaspoon or two into my morning shakes. No ill-effects yet ;)
    Morning Shake
4-5 TBSP of Whey or BodyFortress Gainer
    8-10 oz Milk
    1 Large Banana
    3-4 TBSP of yogurt
    1-2 TSP FlaxSeed Oil
    A few ice-cubes

    Blend

    Hi G'em,

    That's a pretty serious point you're making.

Are you saying that if you were in a car accident and they drug tested you, that you could fail? The judge is hardly going to believe you were eating poppy seeds as he sends you down for a couple of years!!!.

mixed seeds are much cheaper in holland & barrets and other health stores. Tesco can be expensive for nuts and seeds.

The presence of opiates in poppy seeds can certainly skew results, it's not an urban myth. But no, it shouldn't make drivers overly paranoid (as long as authorities are aware of this effect and the testing considers it:
Poppy seed consumption and toxicological analysis of blood and urine samples.

Moeller MR, Hammer K, Engel O.

Institute of Legal Medicine, Saarland University, D-66421 Homburg/Saar, Germany.

Poppy seeds contain morphine in different amounts. Reported concentrations are up to 294 mg morphine/kg poppy seeds. Since penalties based on Street Traffic Law (parapgraph 24a StVG) in Germany (administrative offence) require definitive proof of morphine in blood samples, and the "Grenzwertkommission" in consultation with the Ministry of Transportation recommended a threshold of free morphine of 10 ng/mL, the question arose whether the consumption of poppy seeds can lead to a blood concentrations equal or higher than 10 ng/mL of free morphine. Therefore, five volunteers ate poppy seed products (50 mg morphine/kg poppy seeds). In urine, all on-site tests were enzyme immunologically positive for opiates and were positive to morphine by GC/MS. All the blood samples were negative to morphine by EIA and to free morphine by GC/MS. However, after hydrolysis, morphine was detected by GC/MS in all cases. Accordingly, in Germany, penalties based on parapgraph 24a StVG are not likely to cause road users any concerns should they have consumed poppy seeds. Driver Licensing Authorities, however, should be advised of this problem to avoid unjustified legal measures.

sunflower seeds, sesame seeds and linseeds. I've heard that you should grind sunflower seeds as the body can't digest them if they are whole and they just pass through. So get a coffee grinder or a pestle and mortar.
Raisins are also nice in porridge because they give it a sweeter flavour and is better than using sugar.

Yes. I have heard of prisoners failing tests. I expect many junkie in prison are trying to blame vienna rolls too!

Tescos have got nuts/seeds in various places now. If you only find the organic section it will be more expensive. In my tescos there is a nut/seed section in the fruit & veg. Then another in the crisps sections, then another in the organics section, and prices can vary a lot between sections.
